Led by the bat power produced by Ben Holland and Chris Adams, Lee defeated Tiffin University (Ohio) 12-1 on a cold Sunday afternoon at Olympic Field and won the three-game series, 2-1.
The Flames (5-1) exploded for five runs in the fourth and three more scores in the fifth inning to put the contest completely out of reach of the visiting Dragons.
Lee will be seeking warmer weather when it returns to the diamond on Thursday, hosting Northwood University. The Flames will open Gulf South Conference play next Saturday and Sunday, traveling to face Alabama Huntsville in a three-game series.
Holland blasted his third home run of the season. He also doubled and finished the afternoon with three hits and five runs batted in. Adams ripped a bases-loaded triple and also doubled. He collected four RBI and scored three runs.
Zack Zyburt joined the fun with two hits and two runs scored while Tyler Payne stroked two hits and crossed home plate once. Brayden Ware and Trent Hill added two-base knocks to Lee's 13 hit attack. Leadoff man Geremy Walton tallied two runs and posted a RBI.
"Our offense finally arrived today," stated head coach Mark Brew. "We struggled yesterday and needed some players to step up in the line-up. Holland and Adams gave us a spark up front of the line-up and Zyburt and Payne gave us some quality at bats at the bottom of the order."
Hill picked up his second pitching win in two starts. He worked five innings, giving up one hit, fanning six Dragons and walking two. Logan Campbell, Kyle Briner and Corbin Lamb hurled perfect baseball over one inning apiece while Rob Gustitus, who continues to work his way back from arm problems, gave up one hit and one earned run. Lamb struck out all three hitters he faced.
"Hill had a rough first inning walking the first two hitters, but after the double play on the next hitter he settled down and threw really well," explained the coach. "I have been pleased overall with our effort out of our pitchers. They have been doing a good job challenging hitters. Our team defense has also been solid," Brew added.
Garrett Vernau double and scored the only Dragon run. Kyle Durham contributed the only other hit collected by the losers. Luke Fraley started for Tiffin. He allowed six hits and seven runs over three innings in being charged with the pitching defeat.
