Baseball Drops Slugfest to Northwood, 12-10

Toms Grand Slam Highlights 10 Hit Performance for Lee

Despite 10 hits and three home runs the Lee baseball team dropped a slugfest, 12-10 to Northwood (Mich.) University on Thursday afternoon from Olympic Field.

The Timberwolves added 10 hits of their own and turned back the Flames comeback attempt after jumping out to a 6-1 lead.

Trailing 6-1 in the fifth inning senior Luke Toms jumpstarted the Lee attack with a grand slam homer to right field. Toms also singled in the contest.

Senior Ty Broady would follow with a two-run home run in the fifth to give Lee the 8-6 advantage. Tyler Paine singled home MJ Brown to extend the lead to 9-6.

Northwood would respond the very next inning however as it added three runs in the sixth thanks in large part to an untimely Lee error.

The Flames finished the contest with four fielding miscues.

In the bottom of the sixth inning senior slugger Ben Holland continued his torrid start with a solo blast to left to put Lee ahead 10-9. Holland finished with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.

After tying the game on a wild pitch, the Timberwolves pulled ahead for good with a run-scroing single by Daniel Pulver and a RBI triple by Tanner McCarn. Pulver led the Michigan club with three hits.

Both clubs used a parade of pitchers in the high-scoring affair. Lee started Logan Campbell on the hill and he worked 2 1/3 innings allowing three earned runs on four hits. Campbell struck out three.

Tyler Burcham settled things down with two scoreless innings of relief and was the only Flames' pitcher to not allow a run in the game.

Gage Caprenter (0-1) worked the ninth and was tagged with the loss for Lee. Carpenter allowed two runs on two hits.

The Timberwolves used nine pitchers in the contest. Starter Logan Meadors pitched just one inning and gave up one run on three hits.

Matt Stojkov (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth for the victory. Shawn Larner earned the save as he slammed the door on the Flames in the ninth inning.

Lee falls to 5-2 on the year and will now gear up for a weekend GSC trip at Alabama Huntsville. The three-game set with the Chargers begins on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Northwood was playing its first contest on the year.
