History
Thanks to late inning heroics the Lee University softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from King University on Thursday afternoon from Butler Field.
The Lady Flames will now head on the road to face their first Gulf South Conference (GSC) test away from home as they visit No. 18 Alabama Huntsville on Saturday. The Chargers are off to a hot start sitting at 11-2 overall and 3-0 in league play.
Lee improves to 9-4 on the year while King falls to 0-4.
GAME 1 - LEE 9 KING 8
In one of the most remarkable finishes you'll ever see the Lee Lady Flames scored eight runs in their final at bat to shock King, 9-8 in game one on Thursday.
Senior Lexie Dean capped off the amazing comeback with a two-out, two-run double to left center field. Dean finished the game with three hits.
Emily Dagnan drilled a two-run single to right field to start the rally for the Lady Flames. Hallie Davis followed with a RBI single and Hailey Clark added one of her own.
Rachel Polacek hit a sacrifice fly to make 8-6 before Stevie Baird singled to left to drive in two more runs with two outs and set the stage for Dean's heroics.
Prior to the seventh inning explosion it was all Tornado as the visitors from Bristol raced out to a 7-0 lead after four innings.
Jennifer Kern homered and drove in a pair for King. Hannah Smith added a double and single and had two RBI. Amber Walker tallied three hits.
Morgan Lowe cruised through the first six innings in the circle but hit a wall in the seventh. She allowed eight runs on nine hits and walked six. Lauren Smith (0-1) came on in relief and was tagged with the loss. She pitched 1/3 of an inning and allowed one run on three hits.
Angie Hughes started in the circle for the Lady Flames and tossed 2 1/3 innings allowing three runs on three hits. Clark finished the final 4 2/3 innings to get her first decision of the year. She allowed five runs on 10 hits.
GAME 2 - LEE 6 KING 4
Sophomore Bri Eichbaum moved to a perfect 4-0 as the Lady Flames completed the sweep of King, 6-4 in the nightcap on Thursday.
Eichbaum worked six innings and allowed four runs on seven hits for Lee. She struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Leigh Beatenbough, battling through an injury that has slowed her start to the year, came on and worked a scoreless seventh inning to earn her first save of the season.
With King leading 3-2 the Lady Flames used a four-run fifth inning to pull ahead for good. Nia Ceasar singled home the tying run and Clark drilled a single to left center to put Lee up 5-3.
The final Lee run would score via a squeeze bunt from left fielder Rachel Polacek scoring Courtney Crawford.
Once again Dean led the way at the dish for the Lady Flames with three hits. Clark added two hits and drove in three while leadoff hitter Amanda Lynn executed two bunt singles to perfection and scored a run.
Haley Smothers (0-2) was tagged with the loss for the Tornado. She allowed six runs on 10 hits in five innings. Smith, the game one starter, finished the game working a scoreless sixth inning. She surrendered two hits but got a double play to get out of the jam.
Hannah Smith pulled King to within two with a solo homer to left center in the sixth inning. Alliyah Sands added a pair of hits. Olivia Lawson doubled and Diamond Callwood tripled in a pair of runs in the third inning.
