ROME, Ga. – The Lee baseball Flames watched a 6-2 lead slip away in the bottom of the ninth inning, allowing host Shorter University to deadlock the contest at six.
In the top of the 10
th inning, Miquel Pimentel led off with a single and Ben Holland promptly drilled his third game-winning home run of the season to help the Flames escape with the 8-6 victory.
It was the second homer of the day for Holland, who drilled his 12
th home run of the year in the third inning. The Lee senior first baseman now has a nationally leading 13 round-trippers on the year and he has driven in 37 runs.
Shortly after Holland's homer, Trent Hill singled and the red-hot hitting Chris Adams blasted his third homer of the series.
Lee scored a single run in the first inning when Tyler Payne doubled, stole third and scored on a wild pitch. The margin grew to 4-0 in the third after the jack-shots by Holland and Adams. Lee tacked on unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings and appeared to be coasting into the final frame.
The Hawks just kept pecking away, scoring single runs in the fifth and eighth innings before tying the game in the bottom of the ninth with four runs.
Hill started and pitched six complete innings for the Flames. He allowed three hits, one earned run, struck out eight and walked two. The senior also helped his own cause by collecting four hits and scoring once.
Four other Lee hurlers followed the lefty to the mound before the Flames were able to post the three-game sweep. Corbin Lamb came on for 1 2/3 innings. He gave up three hits, one earned run and fanned three. Tyler Burcham had a strikeout after coming on to relieve Lamb.
Lee closer Kyle Briner ran into problems in the ninth. He gave up four hits, three earned runs, walked one and struck out two. He gained his first pitching win of the year. Christian Bokich came on to work the 10
th and gained the save. He surrendered a couple of hits and picked up two strikeouts.
The Flames are 7-8 in the conference and moved to three games over the .500 mark (15-12). They will host former TranSouth Conference rival Trevecca Nazarene on Monday evening at 6 p.m. It will be a single nine-inning contest.
NOTE: The top of the Lee batting order picked up 11 of the Flames' 12-hit total. They also tallied six of the team's eight runs. Lee has moved into a tie for eighth place in the GSC and just one game behind North Alabama.
