Lee Baseball Drops Pair to West Georgia

Wolves Turn Back Comeback By Flames In Nightcap

The Lee baseball team has faced some tough losses over the years but none may be more devastating than the 2-1 defeat to the University of West Georgia on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader against the visiting Wolves. With runners on second and third and no one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Lee was unable to score.

The Wolves swept Saturday's twin-bill by winning the opening game 8-5. The two teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. on Olympic Field.

WEST GEORGIA 8, LEE 5

The Flames watched a three-run lead slip away in the first game. West Georgia battled back with a single run in the fifth, three runs in the sixth, scored a solo run in the seventh and put three insurance runs on the board in the eighth.

Garret Hayes paced the winning attack with three hits, a run scored and a RBI. He also doubled. Dalton Rogers contributed a double and a single and scored once but it was Artemis Kadkhodaian who did major damage. He stroked a home run and singled, knocked in two scores and scored twice. Tyler Hutch also homered for the winners.

Lee countered with three hits including a double and a home run by Luke Toms. The senior also collected two RBI and scored two of Lee's five runs. Trent Hill added a double and a single and scored twice. Ty Broady picked up a pair of RBI with a double.

TJ Watson started for the Wolves but hurled only two innings. Josh Morgan came on for three but it was Matthew Norton who helped save the day for West Georgia. He delivered four innings, allowed two hits and two earned runs. Morgan got credit for the pitching win.

For the Flames, Justin Alleman started and pitched the first 5 1/3 innings. He surrendered 11 hits, four earned runs, struck out one and walked one. Tyler Burcham came on for 2 2/3 innings, giving up three hits and three earned runs. Corbin Lamb pitched an impressive ninth inning.

 WEST GEORGIA 2, LEE 1

The Flames only managed three hits in the nightcap but still had a golden opportunity to win. In the seventh inning, Broady walked and Geremy Walton followed with a double, giving the Flames runners at second and third and nobody out. Lee's leading hitter, Ben Holland went down swinging and Toms walked to load the bases.

The Wolves went to the bullpen and called on their closer Tyler Gunnin. He walked Toms to load the bases. Hill sent a one-hopper back to the mound which resulted in a forced out at the plate and MJ Brown was called out on strikes to end the contest.

Walton had two of Lee's three hits, while Brown singled for Lee's other base knock. Art Vidrio gave the Flames a solid seven-inning performance. He allowed seven hits, two earned runs, struck out 10 and walked two.

Ben Utley had two hits and scored a big run for the Wolves. Caleb Lopes also had a hit and scored the other West Georgia run. Hayes collected a RBI and Rogers had two hits and posted a key RBI.

Colton Duttweiler started and pitched three innings, allowing two hits and one earned run. Tritt Finnell gave the Wolves three solid innings in relief, giving up a single hit, striking out six and walking three. He collected the pitching win and Guinnin, who was called on to save the day, hurled one inning, posting two strikeouts and walking one.

The Wolves improved to 11-4 overall and 4-4 in the GSC. Lee dropped to 7-10 and 1-7.
