Streaking Tusculum Wins 11th Straight, 13-10

Jay Prior Turned In Six Solid Innings on the Mound for the Flames


Tusculum College put five runs on the board in the first inning and followed with five more in the ninth to outscore the Lee baseball team 13-10 in a nine-inning contest at Olympic Field on Tuesday evening.
 
 The win was the 11th straight for the 20-8 Pioneers and Lee dropped to 12-10. The Flames will regroup and travel to Livingston, Ala. on Saturday and Sunday for a three-game Gulf South Conference series against the University of West Alabama.
 
After giving up five runs in the top of the first, Lee fought back with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. Lee went on top for the first time, 8-5 in the bottom of the third inning. Tyler Payne singled home a run and Peyton Meeker pushed two more scores across the plate with a double down the left-field line.
 
The Flames increased the margin to 10-5 in the bottom of the fifth. Nate Wierzgac and Meeker picked up the RBI in the frame.
 
The Pioneers began to chip away at Lee's lead with a single run in the top of the sixth to cut the margin to 10-6 and got even closer in the eighth inning when they plated two more to make it a 10-8 contest.
 
 The Flames watched the lead completely disappear in the top of the ninth when Tusculum rallied for a game-changing five runs. Dante Key's homer to right field was a key blow in the uprising. Edison Cabrera had an infield hit that resulted in a RBI. Jeremy Glore laced a single to plate another run.
 
The visitors outhit the Flames 13-10. Meeker finished with a single, a double and three RBI. Payne had two hits, scored once and drove in another. Jeffrey Chapuran had a two-base hit and scored twice, while Brayden Ware doubled and knocked in another.
 
Glore doubled to go along with two single. He also scored a run. Daulton Martin launched a double and a single. He knocked in two runs and scored three times.
 
The Pioneers used six pitchers in the win. Tyler Hall, the winning pitcher, was called on for three innings and gave up three hits but no runs and striking out five. McKenly Berry hurled the ninth inning and picked up the save.
 
Lee sent five hurlers to the mound. Wes Albert gave up five hits in the first inning but only one earned run. Jay Prior gave the Flames a chance to win with 6.1 innings of solid work. He allowed four hits, two earned runs, struck out three and walked two. Joe Parete (4-1) was charged with the loss. In one inning, he surrendered four hits, two earned runs, struck out one and issued two walks.
