BRADENTON, Fla. – Lee University's Justin Brooks and Christian Noble advanced out of Thursday's preliminary competition at the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships. The three-day event is being held at the IMG Academy Track & Field Stadium.
Brooks began the day with a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash. The sophomore won Heat 1 with a time of 46.48. Myles Pringle of Ashland University had the top time (46.38), while Omar Johnson of St. Augustine's University was second (46.46). The event's final is scheduled for Saturday at 6:25 p.m. EDT.
"Justin's time of 46.48 is an unreal mark in the 400 and he is only getting his weekend started," said Lee head coach Caleb Morgan. "I couldn't be more proud of the effort he put forth this afternoon and I'm very excited to see what the rest of the weekend has in store."
Noble will enter Friday night's 3000-meter steeplechase final with the top time from the preliminary round. The freshman recorded a personal and Lee record time of 8:55.34 to hold off Leakey Kipkosgei (8:55.44) of American International in the second flight. The top four finishers of the two flights and the next four best overall times advance to the final.
"There is no better adjective to describe Christian while he's racing than 'tenacious'. I expect big things from him tomorrow night in the final. He is poised to do something great," added Morgan.
Adrian Martin was unable to advance to the 100-meter dash final after finishing fifth in her heat and 16
th overall. The senior crossed the finish line at 11.85. The top eight times advanced to the final with the runner in eighth stopping the clock at 11.65.
"Adrian had a tough time getting out of the blocks," said Morgan. "She will shake this off and do great tomorrow."
All three will be back in action on Friday with Brooks in the 200-meter prelims, Martin in the 200-meter prelims and Noble in the 3000-meter steeplechase final. Josiah Brooks opens Lee's day of competition in the triple jump final at 4:45 p.m. Harold Smith enters the fray with the preliminary round of the 800-meter run.
