Volleyball Comes Up Short in Upset bid of UWF

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Silvia Sartori posted 16 kills and 20 digs but in the end the Lee volleyball team fell just short to 13th ranked West Florida in four sets (22-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-23) on Friday evening.

The Lady Flames used an 8-4 run to gain control of the opening set at 16-13. The Argos kept it close and after a timeout cut the lead to 23-22 before a kill from Sartori and a service ace by Hannah Longley won the set for Coach Hudson 25-22.

West Florida would bounce back and win the second set 25-19 thanks to a 10-2 run to win 25-19.

The Argonauts claimed set three 25-21 with back-to-back kills from Makenzie Chrisman and Nadine Williams.

The fourth set went down to the wire tied at 23 before  West Florida then created match point with a kill from Jordyn Poppen. After a Lee timeout the hosts then recorded their 10th block of the night behind Chrisman and Poppen to take the set 25-23 to close out the match.

"I liked the fact that we came out strong and were trying to be the aggressor tonight, and really tried to be more confident than we have been when we've been playing them. At times I thought we really were and then at time sit just kind of let up a little bit," said Lee Head Coach Andrea Hudson.

Sartori recorded her third straight double-double with 16 kills and 20 digs. Hanna Matthews led all athletes with 31 assists, while MaKayla Beebe led everybody in digs at 32.

Poppen paced the Argo offense with 16 kills. Taylor Vaneekeren recorded 27 assists while Logan Kael had 29 digs. Caleigh Morrison recorded seven blocks on the match.

Lee fell to 8-11 on the year and 6-2 in Gulf South meetings. The Argonauts are now 15-4 and 7-1.

"We just have to regroup. I know these road trips are hard and so we have to totally get our minds set for a new match and be ready. We have to just go in there tomorrow and keep playing," relayed Hudson. "We just have to put this match behind us and keep going."

Up next the Lady Flames take on the newest members of the GSC traveling to Auburn Montgomery Saturday at 2 p.m.
