Lady Flames Look To Get Back to GSC Championship

Kelsey Yoder is second on the team with 10 goals this season.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lee women's soccer team will look to win its seventh game in a row and defend its championship as it takes on Montevallo in the Gulf South Conference semifinals today at 1 p.m.

The Lady Flames (13-5-1) advanced to their fourth straight GSC Final Four with a 1-0 grind-it-out win over West Georgia on Tuesday from the Lee Soccer Field. Senior Kate Carney headed home the lone goal of the match in the 72nd minute off a beautiful ball from freshman Avery Engels.

The Falcons (9-6-3) stunned the No. 2 Mississippi College Choctaws on their own field as Montevallo scored in the 82nd minute to advance to its first GSC semifinal.

PAYBACK
The Falcons stunned the Lady Flames in Cleveland back on Sept. 23 as Montevallo overcame a 2-1 deficit with just six minutes left, scoring the tying goal in the 87th minute and the winning goal just two minutes into the first overtime period.

Lee has righted the ship since then however, particularly on the defensive end. The young back line anchored by junior goalkeeper Taylor Green has conceded just one goal (a penalty kick) in the last six matches.

The Lady Flames have outscored their opponents by staggering 18-1 margin during their current winning streak.

OFFENSIVE POWER
Despite the loss of Summer Lanter, winner of just about every award a women's soccer player can achieve last season, the Lady Flames offense is actually scoring at a higher clip this season, ranking 14th in all of the NCAA D2 in goals with 52.

Senior Mia Hollingsworth leads the way with 12 while Kelsey Yoder joins her in double-figures with 10 scores. All totaled 13 different players have scored this season and six players have four or more goals.

UP NEXT
A win this afternoon would put coach Chris Hennessey's ladies back in the GSC Championship on Sunday at 1 p.m. Lee would face the winner of No. 1 seed and undefeated West Florida and No. 4 seed West Alabama.

Even with a loss the Lady Flames will be in great shape to make the NCAA Regional Tournament for the fourth straight season. Lee came in fourth in the latest region rankings.
