Lady Flames Open NCAA Tourney with Rollins

Devin Healy scored in Lee's regular season meeting with Rollins back on Aug. 30.

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Lee women's soccer team will enter the NCAA National Tournament for the fourth consecutive year on Friday as it battles a familiar foe in Rollins College at 3 p.m. to open up the South Region Bracket.

West Florida drew the No. 1 seed after finishing the regular season a perfect 20-0 with a win on Sunday over Montevallo in the GSC Championship. The Argonauts will await the winner of Lee/Rollins on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Lady Flames opened up the 2018 season at Rollins way back on Aug. 30 and fought to a 2-2 draw. Lee battled back on two occasions from a goal down thanks to scores by Lauren Peters and Devin Healy.

Mia Hollingsworth (12 goals, 5 assists) and Kelsey Yoder (10 goals) lead a balanced scoring attack for the Lady Flames. Despite a tough 1-0 loss to Montevallo in the GSC semifinals the Lady Flames rank No. 15 in the nation in total goals with 52 this season. Both players landed on the All-GSC Teams with Hollingsworth claiming a spot on the first team and Yoder earning second team honors.

Junior keeper Taylor Green has conceded just two goals in the last seven matches as Lee enters the NCAA Tournament winners of 6 of their last 7. The Lady Flames are 13-6-1 on the year and were 9-4 in conference play to earn the third seed in the GSC Tournament.

"Rollins is a very good defensive team and they play to their strengths so we need to set the tone in the first 15 minutes to try and get them uncomfortable early in the contest," said head coach Chris Hennessey. "Both teams are a lot different than we played two months. They are a better team and so are we, so we expected a different game than we had on opening weekend."

Rollins finished the year at 9-3-5 overall, and 6-2-2 in Sunshine State Conference play.  Rollins earned the third-seed entering the SSC Tournament, but fell in the semifinals to Nova Southeastern.  Rollins faced their Friday opponent, Lee, in their season opener; the Tars and then No. 9 Flames battled to a 2-2 draw.

Friday will mark the second NCAA meeting for the two clubs. Rollins defeated Lee in the opening round of their last NCAA appearance, in 2016.  The Tars recovered from a 2-0 deficit to force overtime, where Mackenzie Miller scored the game winner off the crossbar with just two seconds left.

If history proves anything it's that Friday's contest should be a tightly contested battle between the Lady Flames and the Tars.
