Lacrosse Rallies Late For Second Straight Win

Broadwick Leads Lady Flames Past Flying Fleet, 12-11

ERSKINE, S.C. – The Lee University lacrosse team won their second straight game as it edged Erskine College 12-11 Saturday afternoon.

Becca Broadwick recorded her second straight hat trick and finished with five goals on the day, including the game winner to lead the Lady Flames to the road victory. Sophomore Madeline Perrigo threw in three goals to get a trick for herself. Rachel Duda had two goals, while Kaylyn Dillon, Mason Cobb, and Brianne Schapira were able to get on the scoring sheet with one goal each for Lee (2-0)

Erskine (0-3) jumped out to an early advantage and took an 8-5 lead into the half.

"We had a slow start and Erskine got out to an early lead. They moved the ball extremely well in the eight and were playing a high-pressure defense that had us off balance in the first half. It was a very aggressive, hard fought game on both sides of the ball. Our attackers adjusted well in the second half and were able to get some critical goals that brought us back in the game," said head coach Addie Wadley.

After tying the game at 8-8 early in the second half the Lady Flames conceded three straight goals before they answered with a run of four of their own to close out the Flying Fleet.

Lee would get the crucial tying goal as Perrigo connected on her third goal of the day with 6:18 left in the game to square it up at 11. The Lady Flames scored the game winning goal with 4:44 remaining as Broadwick capped off her five goal day to give her squad their first lead of the contest.

The defense then responded with crucial stops to hold on to the one-goal advantage. In the final two minutes Lee picked up a yellow card but was able to escape damage as the Lady Flames defense was able to kill the man down opportunity.

"Our defense fought hard and came up with a few critical stops in the final minutes, allowing us to walk away with the win," praised Wadley.

It wasn't quite over yet after the penalty kill. The Lee defense was able to get one more stop and get the ball back with 1:35 left in the game. With just 1:10 left Lee had a shot hit off the pipe and was able to scoop up the ground ball to get a fresh shot clock and run out the remaining seconds for its second win in a row.

"We've definitely got some things to clean up on both sides of the ball, but I am very proud of how hard the girls fought," said Wadley about the overall performance today.

The Lady Flames are back in action Wednesday as they will open up Gulf South Conference play with a visit to Alabama Huntsville at 4 p.m. before returning to Cleveland for their home opener on the South Quad Field against Lees McRae on Saturday at 1 p.m.
