Lady Flames Burn Up Blazers, 3-0

The Lee volleyball made quick work of visiting Valdosta State on Friday night winning 3-0 from Walker Arena to move to 2-0 in the Gulf South Conference.

After a seesaw battle in the first set that saw the Lady Flames use a late 5-2 run to close out the Blazers, 25-23, the home team put the pedal to the metal winning 25-10 and 25-18 for their second straight conference sweep.

"We spent a lot of time the last few days working on us this past week and we responded. We were more strategic tonight in our serving and that really helped us," said Hudson.

Silvia Sartori has posted eight straight double-doubles as the senior slammed home 14 kills and added 12 digs. Hanna Matthews set it up with 31 assists and also added five timely kills and three blocks. Sophomore Allie Koepfer posted nine kills, including five in a dominating set two performance.  Koefper also highlighted coach Hudson's remarks on the service improvement with four aces.

"Allie came up to me tonight and she said 'coach what do you want me to do better tonight' because we talked about taking ownership and she responded and is really growing as an athlete," noted Hudson.

"Our hitting worked really well tonight and we did a nice job of focusing on making the right passes and putting away the points," said Koepfer. "We need to stay focused mentally. At times I think we've lost focused in some matches so we need to just take care of what we can control and stay focused even when the other team is making plays. We did that tonight and we will need to do that again on Tuesday at Shorter."

The Lee defense, anchored by libero MaKayla Beebe, limited the Blazers to just 23 kills and .029 hitting percentage. Beebe had 15 digs and leads the GSC in digs and digs per set.

It feels great to get off to a 2-0 start in conference play," added Hudson. "There's a lot of teams in the GSC that are really strong so it's going to be competitive every time we get on the court."

The Blazers were paced by Jessie Mooney with seven kills. Tammy Reyes-Perez registered a double-double with 18 assists and 11 digs.

Lee improves to 4-8 on the year and 2-0 in league play while Valdosta State falls to 5-9 and an even 1-1 in the GSC.

The Lady Flames will look to make it three straight league wins as they travel to rival Shorter University on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. match.
