West Florida Holds Off Lady Flames in 5

The Lee volleyball team gave GSC unbeaten West Florida all it wanted before fading in the fifth and final set on Friday night from Walker Arena.

After a convincing 25-18 first set victory for the Argonauts the Lady Flames rallied to an extended second set victory, 29-27 on a kill by freshman Abby Stroh.

West Florida would pull back ahead after capturing the third set 25-19. In the fourth set Lee showed some resolve in battling back from a 14-9 and 21-18 deficit to force a tiebreaker with a 25-23 victory.

The Argonauts scored the first six points for the short-set and never looked back to finally close things out at 15-6.

"I thought we competed with much more energy tonight and played more of our style than we did over the weekend," said Lee head coach Andrea Hudson. "I really thought defensively we stepped up and had more blocks tonight than we've had."

The Lady Flames had 12 team blocks led by freshman Hannah Upton who single-handily lifted her team on her back during the fourth set comeback. Upton posted a double-double with 10 slams and 10 rejections. Stroh added 10 slams, 12 digs, three blocks and a pair of aces. Hanna Matthews set up the offense with 38 assists. Daoust posted five blocks and Michaela McMichen bounced around for 27 digs.

"Hannah moved to middle blocker for us and it's a position she hasn't played in a while but she really came up big and brings such energy to the team when she's on the floor," added Hudson.

Veresia Yon led West Florida with 18 kills while Jordyn Poppen posted 17 to go along with 17 digs and Sadie Hough 15. Taylor Vaneekeran and (39 assists) and Brogan Wallin (27) set the offense in motion. Kierra Pots led the team with 24 digs.

The Lady Flames slip to 9-15 and 2-7 in conference play. The Argonauts snap a three-game slide and improve to 16-8 and a perfect 8-0 in the GSC.

Lee will host Auburn Montgomery on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. before heading on the road for a four-match road trip to Mississippi College, West Alabama, Alabama Huntsville and Shorter.
