MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 10 Lee women's basketball team fired out to 26-10 advantage after the first quarter and never looked back to open Gulf South Conference play with a dominating 71-52 road victory over Auburn Montgomery on Saturday afternoon.
After a disappointing offensive effort in a home win over Bryan College on Wednesday the Lady Flames came out and hit five triples in the first half and ended 8 of 19 (42 percent) from beyond the arc to open things up against the Warhawks.
Haley Schubert scored 16 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished off five assists while Abby Bertram led the way with 17 to pace the balanced scoring effort for the Lady Flames. Lindsey Roddy joined her teammates in double-figures with 10. Camryn Grant grabbed a game-high seven rebounds as Lee held a 35-24 advantage on the glass.
"We played with much more urgency and purpose on the defensive end today," said a pleased head coach Marty Rowe. "That energy fed over to the offensive end especially in the first half. This was a really solid team win."
The defensive effort was keyed by five steals from Bertram. Both teams turned the ball over 16 times but the Lady Flames made the most of their 16 forced floor mistakes by turning them into 24 points. AUM scored just seven points off Lee miscues.
The Warhawks were led by Victoria Morales with 15 points and Caitlin Carter who added 10.
Lee shot 50 percent from the field and limited the home team to just 35.6 percent shooting. Coach Rowe's club is allowing opponents to score just 53 points per game through the first six games of the year.
The Lady Flames improve to a perfect 6-0 on the year and are 1-0 in GSC play. AUM falls to 4-2 and 0-1 in league play. The Lady Flames have won the last five meetings with the Warhawks.
Lee will host rival Shorter on Monday night at 6 p.m. before breaking for Thanksgiving. The Lady Flames will return from the holiday and host Johnson University on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m.
