Sophomore Camryn Grant had her best game of the year with 16 points and five rebounds in less than 20 minutes of playing time in leading the Lee women's basketball team to a 97-60 GSC victory over Shorter University inside Walker Arena on Monday evening.
The Lady Flames improved to 2-0 GSC and 7-0 overall. The visiting Lady Hawks dropped to 0-1, 0-4. Lee will break for Thanksgiving and return to action on Dec. 3 when they host Johnson University (6 p.m.). Bigger challenges will come when they host Young Harris College on Dec. 7 and Lander University (S.C.) on Dec. 11.
"It was a good start to the Thanksgiving break. It's always good to play well at home and now we have a chance to take some time to recharge," said Lee head coach Marty Rowe.
While Grant was leading the way, senior Abby Bertram had 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Nicky Widenski enjoyed one of her better performances of the year with 10 points and five boards as the Lady Flames dominated the glass, 32-19. Haley Schubert had nine points before suffering an ankle injury in the first half. Becca Cheeks tallied eight points and led Lee with seven rebounds while Lindsey Roddy also totaled eight points and dished off four assists.
Lee led 19-7 after the first period and 45-24 at the halftime break. The margin grew to 77-36 after three frames before the bench was cleared in the final period and the visitors outscored Lee 24-20.
The Lady Flames shot the ball well from the field again, 37-of-68 (54 percent). They made 8-of-21 treys (38 percent) and hit 15-of-23 charity tosses. Lee's defense stood out again, holding the Lady Hawks to 31 percent shooting from the field but the visitors improved to 33 percent (8-of-24) from beyond the arc. They also made 16-of-19 free throws.
Tatum Ragsdale hit 3-of-4 3-pointers and led her team in scoring (17 points) and rebounds (5). Christian Bolden followed with 13 points while Jasmine Gaines tallied 10 points and led her team in assists with four.
