Harding Edges Lee in NFCA Leadoff Classic Finale

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Lee softball team finished up the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Sunday afternoon losing to Harding (Ark.), 3-2.

The Lady Flames scored both runs in the top of the first inning on single by Kiley Longmire that plated Lily Hatcher and Taylor De Adder. From there though the pitching of Harding starter Pyper James and reliever Emma Dwyer shut the door.

James (2-0) tossed four innings allowing the two runs on six hits. Dwyer was lights out in relief giving up just one hit over three innings while striking out three to earn the save.

Taylor De Adder (2-2) started in the circle for the Lady Flames and left after running into trouble in the third inning. The freshman tossed 2.1 innings allowing three runs, one earned on five hits. Shonna Penney kept Lee in the contest as she 3.2 scoreless innings out of the pen and gave up just two hits.

The Bulls turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 advantage in the third inning on a Briley Feringa single down the right field line. Amanda Fields gave Harding the lead for good with a single up the middle. Both runs were unearned due to an untimely Lee miscue in the field.

Lily Hatcher reached safely in all three plate appearances for the Lady Flames with two singles and a walk. Zoe Miller went 1 for 3 with a single and was named to the All-Tournament team after hitting .385 (5 for 13) and scoring three runs over the five weekend games.

"Overall it was a good test for us this weekend. We played teams from all over the country and without any real knowledge of them competed," said Lee head coach Emily Russell. "We have some injuries that have really changed the lineup but we have continued to push through and work together. I feel that this week will allow to us to prepare for opening GSC play."

The win moves Harding to 4-1 on the season while Lee falls to 6-4 after going 3-2 in its two weekend tournaments to start the season.

The Lady Flames will wrap up a 12-game road trip to begin the season on Wednesday as they travel to Lincoln Memorial in Harrogate, Tenn. for a non-conference doubleheader. The home and Gulf South Conference opener will be Saturday against No. 22 Valdosta State beginning at 1 p.m.
