Chargers Take Two From Lady Flames

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The No. 16 Alabama Huntsville Chargers outpitched the Lee softball team in a 3-2 game one win and outhit the Lady Flames in game two, 11-6 to complete a Gulf South Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Flames (10-13, 1-6) and Chargers (19-6, 7-1) will wrap up the series on Monday at noon.

"We still find ourselves in ballgames despite all of our injuries. At this point we have to have more of a killer instinct in games and not just participate," said Lee head coach Emily Russell. "We have a tricky lineup situation with injuries and limited opportunities to move people. We still have chances to win and need to take advantage of those chances."

GAME 1
The Lady Flames made things interesting in the seventh but the rally was short-circuited as the Chargers opened the twin bill with a 3-2 win.

Trailing 3-0 in the seventh Abby McKinney singled home two runs to bring the Lady Flames within a run.

Akles tossed 6.2 innings allowing just two runs on five hits for UAH before she gave way to Uhlman who worked around a walk to end the game.

Shonna Penney (3-7) was the tough-luck loser. The sophomore allowed three runs through the first two frames before shutting down the Chargers over the final four innings. Penney allowed four hits, three runs, two earned while walking four and striking out two.

Cornell gave the home team an early advantage with a two-run single in the first. The Chargers would add a single run in the second off a Lee error.

GAME 2
The Chargers broke the game open with a six-run second inning to hand Lee an 11-6 defeat in Sunday's nightcap.

Akles hit a three-run home run to left to cap off the rally. Hayes had three hits, including two doubles and drove in two while Cornell was perfect 3 for 3 and also had a pair of RBI.

Taylor De Adder (4-5) allowed 11 runs on 11 hits walked four and struck out three in laboring through all six innings.

Claudia Jones drilled a three run homer to left center to cap off a four-run fourth inning for the Lady Flames as they tried to climb back into the contest. De Adder helped her cause with two doubles and two RBI and Stevie Baird roped two singles in the contest.

Jacobs got the win in the circle for UAH, going two innings. Uhlman finished up the final 3.1 allowing four hits and run to earn the save.
