YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Lee baseball team earned a hard-fought 10-inning victory over Young Harris College, 5-4 in a wild non-conference affair on Wednesday night.
Michael Hendricks (3-3) struck out the side with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings and give the Flames the opportunity to win it in the tenth.
Landon Silver delivered the go-ahead run with a RBI single to score Justen Freeman. Thomas Zazzaro slammed the door with a 1-2-3 bottom of the tenth for his first save of the season. Zazzaro would also go 1 for 2 from the dish with a double and three walks.
The game was delayed a couple of hours due to the lights going out at Zell B. Miller Field on the campus of Young Harris.
"What a wild game. We have rain delays, but not often do you deal with a lights issue. I'm really proud of the team toughing this one out in some adverse conditions against a really good team," said Lee skipper Mark Brew. "What a performance by Michael Hendricks pitching through the heart of the Young Harris line up and striking out three with bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the ninth. I thought we pitched really well overall tonight."
Lee jumped out to a 4-1 advantage. Miguel Pimentel drove in the first run with a groundout in the third. Joshua Perez gave the Flames the lead with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Tyler Payne made it 3-1 in the fifth as he put the pressure on the Young Harris defense with a perfectly executed bunt that resulted in a throwing error allowing Zazzaro to score. Cody Smith followed suit with a RBI squeeze bunt.
"We did a nice job offensively if creating runs through bunt execution and timely hitting. It's a good win that will hopefully get us going back in the right direction," added Brew.
The Mountain Lions battled back with a two run home run by Tucker Greer in the bottom of the fifth. Zaiver Lushington tied things at four in the bottom of the eighth as he launched a solo home run to right center.
The Flames used seven pitchers starting with freshman Alex Butler who allowed one run in two innings.
Jake Tomeleveage (2-1) was hit with the loss after he surrendered the lead in the tenth. McLain Harris kept the home team in the contest as he struck out nine in 3.2 relief innings.
The Flames improve to 12-15 while exacting some revenge on the Mountain Lions (17-9) after dropping a doubleheader to YHC last Wednesday at Olympic Field.
Lee will host Christian Brothers this weekend for a three-game Gulf South Conference series beginning Saturday at 2 p.m. Prior to the first pitch the Flames will once again honor the great service men and women in our community in the annual Military Appreciation Day.
