Kayla Louie delivered a walk off single in the bottom of the seventh to give the Lee softball team a 9-8 victory and Gulf South Conference series victory over Delta State on Sunday afternoon from Butler Field.
The Lady Flames battled from behind on three different occasions to earn the gusty victory. Lee threw two runners at the plate to short-circuit Delta State's scoring opportunities and Shonna Penney struck out six to hold off the Lady Statesmen.
Penney (8-13) earned her second win of the series as she went all seven innings allowing eight runs. Despite 10 hits and seven walks, Penney made some big pitches when it mattered most to keep the Lady Statesmen off the board in the final two frames.
"At first I was nervous because normally by jobs just to get on base but I just took a deep breath and knew I could do it," said Louie. "This win brought us together as a team and showed us we could overcome the obstacles that come our way so it feels really good to get the series win."
Claudia Jones got the Lady Flames on the board with a monster three-run homer to right-center field in the second inning after Delta State started things off with a two-run first.
The Lady Statesmen answered right back with a five-hit, four-run third inning to jump ahead again at 6-3. Abi Gibson drew a bases loaded walk and Kelly Byrd delivered a sacrifice fly.
Caroline Freiling came off the bench for a clutch pinch hit two-run single to cap off a three- run fourth inning. Kiley Longmire had three more hits and finished the series with eight base knocks.
The seesaw battle would once again flip back to Delta with a two-run fifth before Lee tied things up in the sixth on a Taylor De Adder double to right center before Louie sent the crowd home smiling with her walk off single in the seventh to score pinch-runner Darcy Fisher.
"We fought today and we were tough. Game three is a test of toughness. Shonna stepped up for us and we were able to go win it in the seventh," said head coach Emily Russell. "This was a good weekend for us, we celebrated Daddy-Daughter today and it was really cool to see the dads light up and to be able to get a win in front of all of them today. We play well at home and hopefully we can carry this momentum and finish the season strong."
Nicole Fullilove (12-10) also went the distance in the circle for Delta State. She allowed 11 hits and nine runs over 6.1 innings. She walked five and struck out three.
The Lady Flames improve to 18-24 overall and 7-13 in the GSC. The Lady Statesmen fall to 21-18 and 11-13 in league play.
Lee will be back in action on Wednesday at Butler Field for a non-conference doubleheader with Trevecca Nazarene University beginning at 3 p.m.
