Powered by the middle-hitting of Tierra White and McKenna Wharton, visiting University of West Georgia took charge in the first two sets and then turned back a challenge by Lee in the final set to post a three-set victory (25-19, 25-20, 25-20) in a GSC opener on Tuesday evening.
White finished with 12 kills and a remarkable .800 hitting mark. Wharton followed with nine kills as the Wolves finished with a solid .333 hitting percentage. Madi Fleming delivered 29 assists while Carrington Terrell was her team's block leader with nine.
The Lady Flames got an excellent effort from senior Quinne Daoust who had 15 slams and a .324 hitting mark. Freshman Abby Stroh came up with 13 kills and added five digs. Senior Bailey Kress had seven kills as Lee actually had 42 kills on the evening compared to 39 for the visitors.
The big difference came in the middle where the Wolves had 19 blocks compared to only two for the Lady Flames. Senior Hanna Matthews set up Daoust and Stroh with 31 assists. She also had 11 digs. Senior Micaela McMichen went to the Sport Court for 15 digs and sophomore Hannah Longley added nine.
"West Georgia was very strong in the middle and we had nothing to counter with tonight," said assistant coach Kevin Hudson after the Lady Flames slipped to 6-5 overall and 0-1 in GSC play. "We have a lot of things that we have to fix and we will go to work on that tomorrow. It was a disappointing loss but West Georgia was very good tonight."
The Lady Flames will be on the road for the next two matches. They will face Valdosta State in their second straight GSC contest on Friday and then travel down to Atlanta on Oct. 2 to face non-conference rival Emory University. Lee returns to Walker Arena on Oct. 4 hosting Alabama Huntsville and Montevallo the following evening.
