RESULTS
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Lee University men's track & field team completed its non-championship portion of the indoor season at the Camel City Invitational this weekend. The two-day meet was held at the JDL Fast Track.
"We are progressing well heading into next week's conference championship," said Lee head coach Caleb Morgan. "We had a lot of personal bests and seasons PRs this weekend."
Jonah Mayes extended his Lee record in the high jump with a measurement of 2.00 meters, which beat his previous Lee record of 1.95 meters and was just 0.04 meters shy of hitting an NCAA provisional mark. He placed fourth against some very tough competition, while Gari Garmendia threw 14.79 meters in shot put and placed eighth.
Adan Rodriguez, Thomas Kelton, Casey Guthrey and Caleb Eagleson all raced in the 5000-meter run. Rodriguez crossed the line at 16:00.72 for 26
th, Guthrey was eighth (15:08.87), Kelton finished 16
th at 15:25.44 and Eagleson completed the race with a personal best mark of 14:44.02.
"Caleb Eagleson had a great race in the 5k," said Morgan. "This is his first time hitting a provisional mark. He ran a very smart race and closed well."
Stacen Cunningham and Jeremiah McCain competed in the in 60-meter hurdles and placed 17
th (8.62) and 20
th (8.69).
Caleb Campbell, Charles Nnantah and McCain all competed in the 200-meter dash. Campbell placed second overall with a time of 22.27 seconds. McCain ran 22.78 seconds and placed seventh, while Nnantah ran 23.54 seconds and placed 36
th.
Mayes was sixth in the triple jump with a measurement of 13.84 meters and his long jump of 6.36 meters was good for 11
th. Derek Flatford placed seventh with a long jump of 6.61 meters. Daniel Surman was 38th in the long jump at 5.54 meters.
"We had big performances from Jonah Mayes in the high jump and Caleb Campbell in the 200. Both athletes are closing in on provisional marks," added Morgan.
Jared Herzog (4:23.17) was the 20
th runner across the finish line of the mile run. Elias Sandifer (4:25.53) was 23
rd and Jacob Hatcher (4:36.13) finished 38
th.
Three Flames were in the field of the 3000-meter run. Will Stone was first across the finish line with a 13
th-place time of 8:35.82. Ezekiel Harless was 44
th overall at 8:59.71 and Andrew Hendry was 54
th (9:08.58).
Christian Noble (8:05.86) was accepted into the Camel City Elite 3000 and placed fifth against some tough competition, including Paul Chelimo. Chelimo was in the 2016 Olympics and was the silver medalist in the 5000-meter run. Noble's time was a Lee record and improved his provisional qualifying time.
"Christian is having a breakthrough year. His mentality and focus on race day has allowed him to do some special things so far. We are excited to see what he does in the postseason," Morgan concluded.
Daniel Surman and Eli Brooks were seventh and 12
th, respectively, in the pole vault. Surman cleared 4.40 meters and Brooks recorded a personal record at 4.10 meters.
The Flames will return to the Birmingham CrossPlex for the inaugural Gulf South Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship on February 18-19.
