VALDOSTA, Ga. – Taylor De Adder launched a solo home run in the sixth inning and the Lee softball team turned a game-ending double play to knock off No. 19 Valdosta State, 2-1 in Sunday's series finale.
After De Adder's homer gave the Lady Flames the lead the Blazers loaded the bases with just one out in the bottom of the seventh. Lee Starter Shonna Penney induced a fly out to right field and Kayla Gooch finished off the unconventional double play by gunning down a base runner trying to tie the game at home to give the Lady Flames a thrilling GSC victory.
Penney (6-1) danced her way around seven walks and six hits allowing just one unearned run in tossing the complete game. She struck out five Blazers in the game and threw 142 pitches.
"We played well all weekend and kept fighting for game three," said Lee head coach Emily Russell. "Shonna got out of a bases loaded no-out inning early and I knew she was dialed in and confident. They are a very strong hitting team and we kept them off the scoreboard for most of the series. I'm proud of how we fought all weekend."
Samantha Richards (4-2) suffered the loss in the circle for the Blazers. She allowed both runs, one earned, on just two hits and punched out six. Shayne O'Connell came on in the sixth to and recorded the final five outs, two via the strikeout.
Bailey Church delivered the only other hit for the Lady Flames on a double in the sixth inning. In addition to the game-ending defensive play, Gooch drove in the first Lee run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
The Blazers scored their lone run of the game on Haley Garrett single and a throwing error in the fifth frame. Valdosta State stranded 12 bases runners, unable to come up with the big hit throughout the contest.
The win moves the Lady Flames to 13-8 on the year and 4-5 in the GSC. Valdosta State drops to 16-5 and 7-2 in league play.
Lee will continue south and visit Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach, Fla. on Tuesday. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
