The Sept. 21, 2013 thrilling volleyball victory over the University of West Florida will always be remembered as showing the entire Lee University athletic program it had a place as it entered the unproven grounds of Gulf South Conference and NCAA Division II.
The Argonauts entered Walker Arena on that Saturday afternoon ranked 17
th in NCAA DII and might have been still celebrating head coach Melissa Wolter's 100
th win one night earlier. Lee stunned the visitors in the opening set, 25-18, and enjoyed a five-point margin in the second game when Wolter ordered a timeout and sent what looked like a different Argonaut team onto the sport court. The visitors fought back with 25-21 and 25-16 wins to take a 2-1 advantage.
The Lady Flames continued to be pushed to the limit before pulling out a fourth-set (28-26) thrilling win. The short set also went to the wire before Lee tallied two straight points to complete the huge comeback, 15-13, completing the historic 25-18, 21-25, 16-25, 28-26, 15-13 triumph before a standing and applauding Lee supportive fans. It marked only the fifth conference defeat over the past seven seasons for the Pensacola-based squad, Coach Wolter's record stood at 100-16 before the contest.
"That win truly showed us that if we worked hard and continue to recruit the right type of players we really would have a place in the Gulf South Conference," recalled Lee head coach Andrea Hudson. "I will always be proud of how our girls responded after the two sets we lost. West Florida had an outstanding and well-coached team."
"I will always remember that win," said Coach Hudson, who now has well over 800 wins directing the Lady Flames. "They were considered the power house of the conference and I really believe we just hoped to have a good showing against them that afternoon. However, we also had Camil Martinez at the helm and she really pushed the girls to win that match. It's not every year you have a setter who has played in the Olympics. That type of leadership and commitment to winning just overflows into the other players."
The Lee coach remembers being concerned about losing three key frontline players from the 2012 team, but Paula Martins, Patty Orozco, Erin Hill, Lauren Williams and Latrice Johnson stepped up to answer some of those concerns. Williams, who was in the midst of her junior season, enjoyed the best performance of her career. She finished with 10 kills and a .381 hitting mark. She also had eight blocks and two digs.
Hill, only a freshman, paced the Lady Flames with 19 slams and a solid .425 hitting percentage. The versatile Martins chipped in with 10 kills, two aces, 18 digs and six blocks. Orozco did her part with 12 kills, four digs and three blocks. Johnson, another one of Coach Hudson's versatile athletes, had nine kills, 18 digs and three blocks.
Kills do not come without assists and Martinez, answered the call, dishing off 56 dimes to her teammates. She came up with 19 digs and three blocks. Libby Peigen recorded 23 digs and Deborah Magalhaes followed with 15 digs.
