MONTEVALLO, Alabama – Host University of Montevallo outscored the Lee women 25-17 in the final 10 minutes in posting a key GSC victory over the Lady Flames on Saturday afternoon. It is the second straight loss and dropped Lee to 6-4 and Montevallo improved to 6-3.
"This one hurts because we competed like crazy for the most part today. We've still got a ways to go with this team, things that that we can control," said Lee Coach Marty Rowe. "Montevallo just finished better down the stretch today. Tomorrow is a great opportunity for a change." The same two teams will battle again on Sunday, at 3 p.m.
The two talented squads fought back and forth for the first three quarters. The Lady Flames got out of the gate quickly, enjoying a 24-10 lead at the end of the first period. The Falcons held Lee to jump nine points in the second frame and moved on top 34-33. Rowe regrouped his ladies at the half and they tallied 25 markers in the next 10 minutes and went up 52-50. Montevallo was not about to be denied and outscored Lee 25-17 in the final quarter to claim the important win.
Julia Duncan and Hannah Garrett paced the Lady Flame scoring with 14 point each. Cam Grant had 11 points and Haley Schubert rounded out the double digit scoring with 10. Garrett and Schubert cleaned the class for seven boards each. Halle Hughes pitched in with nine points and six rebounds.
Savannah Lee was best for the winners with 18 points and six boards. Jennifer Andrews followed closely with 16 points. Jordan Jones had 13 points and Kourtnie tossed in 10 to help direct the Montevallo scoring.
The Lady Flames shot 42% from the field, but made just 26% (7 of 27) from long range. They were awarded only 12 free throws and made eight. The host Falcons shot 45% from the floor and also canned just 26% of their 3-point attempts. The winning margin came at the charity stripe, Montevallo making 16 of 25.
"We need to bounce back tomorrow and work on cleaning up on both ends of the court," concluded Coach Rowe.
