The Walker Arena crowd was raucous and decked out in white and the Lee volleyball team gave them plenty to get excited as the Lady Flames knocked off Valdosta State, 3-1 on Tuesday evening.
The Lady Flames exacted some revenge on the Blazers after falling in Valdosta last Friday in a hard-fought five-set battle.
Lee jumped out to an early lead with a 25-21 victory in set one before the Blazers controlled set two, 25-17. But that simply set the stage for the Lady Flames to play their best set of the year with a dominating 25-14 performance. Lee would hit .481 as a team and post 13 kills and 0 errors.
With the 2-1 advantage the Lady Flames made sure to not entertain another five-set matchup with Valdosta State as they sealed the victory with a 25-16 win in the fourth.
Emma Flowers brought her hitting shoes to the Sport Court at Walker Arena as she tallied a match-high 18 slams while hitting 395. Macy Petty delivered the best performance of her young career with eight kills and six blocks.
"It was just a total team effort tonight and I'm just so proud of all the girls for how they played," said Flowers. "We believed that we could come out and play much better than we did on the road and we responded tonight. I'm excited for us to ride this momentum and put together two more quality performances against tough teams this weekend."
Lyssi Snouffer added eight slams and two aces. Calina Croy did a little bit of everything with 36 assists, 15 digs and four blocks. Scottie Cook posted six kills on a .364 hitting percentage and was big at the net with five blocks.
"It was good to be back home and the crowd was amazing for us tonight and I thought our girls really responded well after a tough road trip," said Lee head coach Callie Murphy. "That third set in particular is how we are capable of playing all the time and I was proud to see our girls put it altogether. We had 20 blocks and out-blocked our opponent for the first time this year and that really helped spark our team tonight."
Talented freshman Jojo Smith led the Blazers with a double double of 19 kills and 10 digs while Kylie Stroehlein pitched in 10 slam. Tammy Reyes-Perez set up the offense with 40 assists.
The Lady Flames improve to 5-10 on the year and are now 5-1 at home on the year and 3-0 at home in the GSC and 3-4 in league play overall. Valdosta State drops to 9-11 and 2-5 in the GSC.
"Nothing has come easy this season but this team finds a way to overcome adversity and I love that spirit about them," said Murphy. "We had so many people step up tonight for us and I believe that balance will serve us well this weekend."
Lee will continue the three-match homestand as it hosts GSC perennial power West Florida on Friday at 6 p.m. and Auburn Montgomery on Saturday at 2 p.m.
