Volleyball Scores Seven Unanswered Points to Win Five Set Thriller over Shorter

Emma Flowers delivered 19 kills and the Lee volleyball team scored an incredible seven straight points after trailing 13-8 in the fifth set to stun the Shorter Hawks, 3-2 on Senior Day inside Walker Arena.

Allie Whittinghill delivered the final blow of the 7-0 run to close out the match as she slammed home her 17th kill of the match. Hannah Upton added 10 slams and three blocks and Abigail Luke also delivered 10 kills. Reagan Bratton served up three aces and served up 25 assists to her teammates.

Flowers and Whittinghill have developed a potent 1-2 punch this season. Flowers leads the team with 307 kills while Whittinghill follows close behind with 261.

Honored in a special ceremony prior to the match, seniors Calina Croy and Hannah Longley made the most of their final game on the Sport Court in Walker Arena. Croy split time with Bratton at setter and registered 25 assists while Longley set the defensive tone with 10 digs.

"Ultimately it came down the to the fifth set and we had nothing to lose so we just got a little gritty and showed a ton of toughness to battle back. We stayed calm and never lost hope and I love the way these girls battle. Shorter has played well this season, so to get a rivalry win and in five sets is a wonderful accomplishment for our team," said Lee head coach Callie Murphy.

The Lady Flames jumped out to a first set, 25-22 victory before the Hawks righted the ship and took sets two and three, 25-22, 25-18.  The never-say-die Lee squad forced the tiebreaking set with a 25-23 win in set four as Whittinghill closed things out with a decisive kill.

Shorter's Lacee Glover did a little bit of everything with 16 kills, five aces and 10 digs. Emily Crocker tallied 15 slams and six blocks. Annie Smith dished off a match-high 41 assists while Madison Sprosty posted 27 digs.

Lady Flames improve to 7-18 overall and 5-9 in the GSC. The loss drops Shorter to 15-12 and 8-5 in league play.

"I've learned this season I have a team that never gives up and that's going to grow and keep getting better. I'm so grateful we were able to send these special seniors out with a victory in their last home game. That's an opportunity that not everybody gets to experience and to do it the way we did it today was incredible," concluded Murphy.

The win was not only a nice way to end the home schedule and honor the seniors, it also kept the Lady Flames alive in the chase for the eighth and final spot in the GSC Tournament. Lee will wrap up the season with a pair of road matches next week in West Tennessee. The Lady Flames will battle Union on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Christian Brothers on Friday at 6 p.m.
