Men's Track & Field Gathers Four Qualifying Marks And Two Lee Records In Opening Weekend

BOSTON, Mass./BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Lee University men's track & field team combined for four national qualifying marks and two Lee records at Boston University's Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener Saturday evening and the BSC Panther Icebreaker on Friday.

Christian Noble, Silas Eckenroad and Hayden Judge made the trip to Boston to take on the 5000-meter run. Noble finished 30th in the race with a time of 13:52.59 and Eckenroad stopped the clock at 14:21.65 (55th) to meet the provisional standard of 14:29.97. Judge was the 68th runner across the finish line at 14:35.33.

At Friday's BSC Panther Icebreaker inside the Birmingham CrossPlex, Jeremiah McCain posted a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.16 seconds in the final. His times in the preliminary was 8.27. With his performance in the final, McCain met the qualifying mark of 8.23 seconds and knocked 0.28 seconds off what was the Lee record of 8.44 heading into the weekend.

Stacen Cunningham qualified for the final of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.44 in the preliminaries. He placed fifth in the final at 8.62. Caleb Long recorded the 11th-best time in the preliminary at 9.00.

Titus Lagat joined McCain in meeting a national qualifying mark. Lagat won the mile run by almost nine seconds after crossing the finish line at 4:10.57. The time to beat for qualifying is 4:10.99.

Matthew Black didn't allow the runners to be the only group to enjoy meeting qualifying marks or setting Lee records. Black finished second with a 17.76-meter measurement in the weight throw. The toss was nearly three meters further than Gari Garmendia's Lee record mark of 14.86 meters. Camden Williams joined Black in the weight throw and placed sixth with a throw of 13.93 meters.

Alexander Tate and Gift Nkosi were Lee's representatives in the 60-meter dash. Tate advanced to the event final where he finished sixth with a time of 7.06. He recorded times of 7.04 and 6.91 in the preliminary and semi-final, respectively. Nkosi was 23rd (7.19) in the preliminary round.

Tate added a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 22.25 seconds. Cunningham was close behind in sixth (22.49). McCain was 10th (50.88) in the 400-meter dash with Cunningham in 11th at 51.00. Lagat crossed the finish line of the 800-meter run in second place with a time of 1:53.80.

Dawson Reed and Jacob Hatcher finished in the top four of the 3000-meter run. Reed was third (8:38.23) and Hatcher finished fourth (8:38.53).

In the high jump, Long tied for ninth with a clearance of 1.75 meters. He also finished 13th with a long jump of 5.90 meters.

Daniel Surman cleared 4.60 meters to finish second in the pole vault. Eli Brooks finished eighth with a vault of 4.15 meters and Randall Kramer's height of 3.70 meters was good for 10th.

Williams recorded a throw of 12.88 meters to finish seventh in the shot put. Black was 13th with a toss of 11.00 meters.

The Flames are scheduled to return to action on January 15 at the UAB Vulcan Invitational. The event will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
