Pitching, Hitting Dominates in Baseball Series Sweep of CBU

The Lee University baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Christian Brothers University with a dominating 15-0 (run-rule) victory on Sunday afternoon at Larry Carpenter Stadium on Olympic Field.  The win improved Lee's overall record to 8-1 and 8-0 in GSC play.

Alex Harper-Cook turned in six innings of impressive work, allowing the Bucs only one hit. He walked one and struck out six. Freshman Cole Matthaidess came on to pitch a perfect seventh inning. "Harper-Cook gave us exactly what we needed today with a really strong start after we had to dig into bullpen for 12 innings in the opening day of the series," commented Lee head coach Mark Brew after the sparkling performance.

"It's a great start to the year, but we still have nine other weekends to go. We need to keep winning weekend series. We have a big week with Lincoln Memorial coming to town Tuesday and hitting the road to Montgomery for a huge weekend with Auburn Montgomery," added Brew.

The Lee bats got going in the third inning and plated three runs. They added one run in the fourth and seven big tallies in the fifth to put the contest far out of reach. Four more runs went up on the board in the sixth frame.

The Flames had six extra-base hits including three home runs. Landon Silver was tops on the hitting chart with three hits, a home run, a double and four RBI. Thomas Zazzaro also homered and scored twice while Colton Yeager went deep and drove in two runs. Jared Demkowicz pitched in with a two-base knock, two RBI and a run scored. Brandon Daniels had a two-base knock and plated two runs.

Justen Freeman came on to bang out a pair of hits and score a run while Luke Hughes had a hit and a RBI. Hughes made two outstanding plays from his shortstop position. "The offense was ready to go and we were able to tack on several multiple run innings," said Brew. "We got contributions up and down the line up and off the bench."

The Bucs got their only hit in the third inning when Hayden Smith doubled. They used five pitchers. Travis Cole started and was credited with the loss. In four innings, he allowed five hits and five earned runs. Two big errors hurt his pitching cause.
