MONTGOMERY, Alabama – The Lee women's basketball team blistered the nets for over 57% shooting in the first quarter and then improved to 67% in the second stanza in building a 43-19 advantage by halftime. The torrid shooting attack eased off in the third quarter (36%) but Lee came right back in the final frame to knock down 65% of its shots from the field in claiming a 78-39 victory.
The Lady Flames improved to 12-6 overall while Auburn Montgomery slipped to 2-12. They will face the Warhawks again on Saturday in the final regular season game at 5 p.m.
"Good job by our team on both ends of the court for the most part tonight," said Lee head coach Marty Rowe. "I thought we had great energy, maybe we lost it for a little bit in the third quarter but it's exactly the way we needed to start this road trip. We need to enjoy this one tonight and get back after them again tomorrow."
While the offense was commanding a lot of the spotlight, the defense held AUM to only 30% shooting for the game (12-of-40). The Warhawks made just a pair of triples but were awarded 19 free throws and canned 13. The Lady Flames outscored the host club 34-16 in points in the paint and 15-0 in fast break points.
Haley Schubert filled up the stat line. She scored 18 points, dished off eight assists, came up with three steals and claimed four rebounds as the Lady Flames won the battle of the glass 34-23. Freshman Julia Duncan added 16 points and five rebounds. Maddie Long followed with 12 points, joining Schubert and Duncan with a pair of 3-pointers. Halle Hughes was Lee's leading rebounder with seven. All totaled, 10 Lady Flames scored and Morgan Carbaugh came off the bench to tally eight.
The Warhawks did not have a player in double-figure scoring. Makayla Bullard knocked down a pair of triples in finishing with nine points. Jamya Tyus added seven points and led her team in rebounding with five.
