The Lee baseball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Union University on Saturday at Olympic Field in Larry Carpenter Stadium. The Flames posted an 8-0 win in the opener and then had to push across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the nightcap 3-2. The two teams are scheduled for another nine-inning contest on Sunday afternoon. The first pitch will be at 1 p.m.
Game 2
The Flames made the best of only five hits and Ryan Beamish was the only batter with two hits. He also collected a RBI. Nate Bynum had a hit and scored two of the three runs while Dylan Standifer produced the big blow in the bottom of the ninth, singling home a run with the bases loaded. Colton Yeager had Lee's only other hit.
The Flames rode the solid pitching of Seth Konkel. He worked 5 2/3 innings, allowed five hits, one earned run, struck out nine and walked three. Michael Hendricks came on in relief for 2 1/3 innings and allowed just two hits, one earned run, walked one and fanned three. Andy Rivera got the pitching win, striking out two Bulldog hitters in the ninth inning.
Union got a home run from Josh Bozoian who also finished with two hits and two runs scored. Overall, the Bulldogs out-hit the Flames 7-5. Austin Zeitler was 3-of-3 including a double and RBI. Dorian Berry also collected a double.
Luke Williamson started and worked 4 2/3 innings. He allowed just three hits, walked five and struck out eight. Logan Portis followed with 3 1/3 innings and surrendered an earned run while fanning four and walking two. Ryan Middleton came on in the bottom of the ninth inning. He walked the bases full before allowing the winning hit and was charged with the loss.
Game 1
Pitching was the name of the game in the opener. With some 15 Major League scouts looking on, Lee senior right-hander Logan Workman did not disappoint. In 5.2 innings he struck out nine Union hitters and gave up only two hits. He did walk six Bulldog batters in picking up the win.
Senior lefty Tyler Fairchild was also impressive. He hurled the final 3.1 innings and surrendered just one hit while walking one and fanning a pair.
The Flames broke open a scoreless contest in the third inning by putting five runs on the board. Freshman Riley Black ripped a shot into left-center field that plated three runs. Nate Bynum drove in the final run of the frame.
Three more runs in the fifth sealed the deal. Jared Demkowicz started the inning with a double and Black followed with his second two-base hit of the game in posting his fourth RBI. Colton Yeager followed with an RBI single. Thomas Zazzaro blasted a two-base shot to help cap the rally.
Alan Smith had a pair of hits, scored a run and drove home another in the victory. Landon Silver reached base three times and scored two runs.
Walter Adkisson was the starting and losing Union pitcher. In four innings, he allowed five hits and seven runs but only three were earned. He walked four and fanned two. Brandon Maxwell pitched an inning and surrendered three hits and one run. Freshman lefty Sam Poindexter hurled a solid three innings and did not give up a hit while walking two and recording one strikeout.
