Lady Flames Complete Sweep of Visiting Shorter

The Lee women's basketball team got off to a quick start in the opening quarter, outscoring visiting Shorter University 26-7 and was never threatened in an 85-49 Gulf South Conference victory on Saturday evening inside Walker Arena. The Lady Flames improved to 8-5 while the Lady Hawks slipped to 2-11.

"I thought our team came out determined to get off to a good start," said Coach Marty Rowe. "We weren't quite as sharp defensively tonight. We fouled too much in the first half and got out-rebounded. The ability to take care of the ball for quality possessions is definitely a step in the right direction."

For the second straight night, the Lady Flames dished off 19 assists to only five turnovers. However, they lost the battle of the boards 39-32 to the smaller Shorter club. Lee had 13 steals in the game and outscored the visitors 24-4 in points off turnovers. They were also solid in the paint with a 42-24 margin and owned the fast-break points 23-9.

Hannah Garrett had 20 points for the Lady Flames but it was the play of Haley Schubert which drew praise from Coach Rowe. Schubert produced a double-double with 17 points and 10 assists. She also had six rebounds and six steals. Rowe also liked the play of senior Maddie Long. "Her play will not show up in the box score but she did a lot of good things for our club tonight," pointed out Coach Rowe.

Halle Hughes was solid with 10 points while Julia Duncan contributed nine points and three assists. Morgan Carbaugh came off the bench to knock down two triples and finished the night with nine points and three rebounds. Macy Woodworth finished with seven points and Cam Grant had five points and four rebounds.

The Lady Flames will hit the road and face West Georgia in a pair of games next Friday and Saturday. "It is always a difficult place to play because of the large arena," noted Rowe. "We want to continue to improve daily and next week will be a great opportunity for growth."
