No. 3 Lady Flames Open GSC Spring Championship Playoffs Against CBU

Julia Kaset and the Lady Flames look to kick their way into the GSC SCS Quarterfinals on Sunday.
After seeing the fall season cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the national 3rd-ranked Lee women's soccer team, and other Gulf South Conference clubs, except for West Florida, returned to action this spring and will began battling for the GSC Spring Championship on Thursday, March 18 when first-round games were played.

The GSC divided the conference into groups of A and B. The Lady Flames, ranked 3rd by the United Soccer Coaches, are 7-0-1 and 4-0-1 against Group A competition. Valdosta State which battled Lee to a 2-2 draw on February 25, is 3-1-1 overall and 3-0-1. Montevallo ranked 14th, is always a threat and stands at 4-2 and 3-1. Delta State rounds out the GSC listed and is 20th position.

In Group A Mississippi College joins Lee as a top seed with a perfect 5-0 record. Delta State is 5-1-0 and 3-1-1 while West Alabama (2-2-1) and Christian Brothers (2-2-1) bring up possible contenders in championship play.

Lee Coach Chris Hennessey was questioned about how he used the spring to get ready for the fall season, "Like most teams, the spring has been a chance for us to try new things and get to see the freshman class play," he replied.

Lee's Hennessey was asked How much stock he put in the GSC tourney since there is no advancement to national playoffs? "Although there is no NCAA tournament to play for, we are still taking the GSC tournament very seriously," he answered without any hesitation. "It is certainly something we us as coaches and players want to win and will we prepare for it as best we can.

Hennessy also responded to how his team's has reaction to a spring season. "I am really proud and happy with the girls. Playing after such a long time (off) has not been easy for them. The season has been short and intense. I know they have given everything thus far and I am excited to see how the remainder of the season pans out."

The Lady Flames open tourney play at noon on Sunday when they host Christian Brothers on the Lee Multi-Sports Complex. Christian Brothers defeated Auburn Montgomery (2-1) in the opening round to earn the right to face the Lady Flames, who drew a first-round bye. A victory in the contest would allow Lee to remain home for the semifinal round on (Sunday) March 28. The championship game is slated for Saturday, April 3 at the John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Alabama.

The Lady Flames coach says the tournament is wide open. "To be honest I have only watched teams on our side of the bracket. It is a unique year, and I would say at this point any team can win the tournament. I think whichever teams stays healthy and COVID free has the best shot," Hennessey concluded.
