Lacrosse Win Streak Halted By D1 Presbyterian

CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- The Lee University women's lacrosse team fell, 14-7, to Division I Presbyterian College in a shortened contest on Sunday afternoon from the Multi-Sport Complex.
Brittney White scored four goals to record her fifth straight hat trick, and sixth on the year. Shayna Ryan threw in two more goals of her own and Avery Schenk rounded out the scoring with one.

Presbyterian (2-4) got the scoring started with a Sarah Marshall score 50 seconds into the contest but the Lady Flames would answer. Ryan would find the back of the net just under two minutes later to even the score before White allowed Lee (5-3) to take the lead with 26:26 to go in the half.

The teams traded goals from there as Ana Boothe evened it up with 21:38 on the clock but Schenk gave the hosts the lead again after three minutes had expired.

The Blue Hose found the back of the net just 44 seconds apart from each other to take the lead and White knotted things at four with 11:27 to go.

Marshall scored her second goal of the contest off a free position shot with 8:09 left in the half before the White and Ryan combo struck again with just over 5:30 remaining and to send the teams into the locker room tied at five.

Ryan started the second half scoring with a free position shot to give the Lady Flames their final lead of the contest. Presbyterian then rattled off four straight goals before play was suspended due to lightning.

Lee cut the lead to two with 15:50 left with a White goal from a Ryan pass but the guests rattled off five straight goals to take a 14-7 lead before the game was ended with 2:48 remaining due to lightning.

"Our defense kept it close and ended up tied at the half, but we ran out of legs in the second," noted head coach Derrel Martin.

Ryan ended with a game-high three assists, to tie the program record for career assists with 30 in just her third season. The Collierville native also had a contest-high five points. Jamey Ryan led all athletes with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. White had eight draw controls to pace the field.

Kaleigh Bernard got the start and went 46:07 in goal allowing eight goals and making two saves. Caleigh Smith lasted 11:06 but allowed six shots to find the back of the net.

Kelly Hyman had a contest-high five goals and Abby Edmisten had four of her own to round out the hat trick scorers for the Blue Hose. Boothe and Kara Diclemente had two assists each while Taryn Tomas had three ground balls. Edmisten led the team with two caused turnovers and Diclemente paced the squad with three draw controls.

Heidi Shafer went the complete game in net allowing seven goals but made six saves for the South Carolina squad.

Presbyterian led the Lady Flames in almost every statistical category. Lee was able to win the draw controls 12-11 while falling in shots (18-15), shots on goal (16-13), and ground balls (13-12).

"We had fewer turnovers today, but you can't make many mistakes against a team that fast and athletic," Martin said. "We are looking to minimize our mistakes and take care of business in the GSC this week," he concluded.

Lee will be back in action next Wednesday as they travel to GSC foe Young Harris beginning at 4 p.m.
