Lady Flames Post Historic Win Over Young Harris

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. -- In a game of milestones the Lee University women's lacrosse team defeated Young Harris, 15-14, on Thursday afternoon from the Soccer and Lacrosse Field on the campus of Young Harris College.

Brittney White tied the Lady Flames record with eight goals to lead the Flames and Dariana Blanton tied the program record with 10 points in the contest. With her eighth point in the game, Blanton also became only the second player in program history to reach the 100 point club.

The win also marked the first time Lee (6-3, 2-0 Gulf South Conference) defeated the Mountain Lions in the team's short history.

After going into the halftime break down 9-5, the Lady Flames promptly evened the score at nine with four unanswered goals. Blanton got the scoring started in the 2nd period with a free position shot only 56 seconds in and scored on another spot shot just two minutes later.

White tied the contest with back-to-back goals, including a man-up goal after Kelsey Dover picked up a yellow card for Young Harris (4-5, 1-1 GSC). 

The Mountain Lions answered, scoring their first goal of the half from a Taylor Greenburg shot and a Leigh Anne Turner assist with 19:55 to go. Lee promptly knotted it back at 10 only 61 seconds later that jump-started a 4-1 spurt to give them a 14-11 advantage with just 10 minutes remaining.

Young Harris rallied with a run of their own evening things at 14 with 3:15 to go. Following a timeout, the Lady Flames gained possession from the draw control and after a free position shot was saved, Blanton scored with 2:01 to complete the historic comeback and remain unbeaten in conference play.

White led all players with eight goals on 12 shots and Blanton threw in five of her own. Shayna Ryan and Avery Schenk rounded out the Lee scoring with one goal each. Blanton also led all players with five assists. Shannon Galloway recorded three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. White led the team with seven draw controls.

Greenburg led the Moutain Lions with four goals and Anna Luckie paced the squad with four assists. Aubrie Valvo led all athletes with four ground balls and 10 draw controls. Eryn Brown had three caused turnovers.

Caleigh Smith went the final 30 minutes in goals, getting credit with the win making two saves, and allowed only five goals. Kaleigh Bernard recorded a save in the first 30 minutes of the game.

Maddy Meyers went the complete game, making 13 saves but allowed 15 goals to get tagged with the loss.

Lee led in almost every major statistical category holding an edge in shots (32-20), shots on goal (28-17), had fewer turnovers (20-26), and more ground balls (18-14).

Young Harris had a better clear percentage converting 20-out-of-23 while Lee was successful on only 21-of-27. The Mountain Lions also won the draw controls 18-12.

The Lady Flames will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Lander, S.C. to take on the new Gulf South Conference foe Lander University. The first draw control is scheduled for 11 a.m.
