It is rare the top-seeded teams meet for a championship, whether in NCAA basketball or on soccer field competition. One exception could very well be if Gonzaga and Baylor tangle for the honors in the NCAA Championship basketball game. The other for certain will be the Lee women's soccer team facing rival Mississippi College for the Gulf South Conference Spring Championship. The two clubs are slated to meet on the John Hunt Park facility in Huntsville, Alabama on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Lady Flames (8-0-2, 4-0-1 GSC) have played for three GSC Championships. Lee advanced to the title match with a win over Christian Brothers (1-0) in the quarterfinals and a (5-3) penalty kick victory over Delta State in the semifinals.
The Lady Choctaws are (7-0, 5-0 GSC).They advanced to Saturday's championship match following wins over UAH (3-1) in the quarterfinals and West Alabama (2-1) in the semifinals.
"Mississippi College has been a good team for a number of years, and is always competitive every time we play. I know they will want to win this game as much as we do," remarked Lee head coach Chris Hennessey before his team departed for Huntsville.Â
The teams have played 10 previous times with Lee holding a 6-3-1 edge. Each of the last four years, the teams have met in postseason play, whether GSC or NCAA competition. Over the last three years, the Lady Flames have eliminated Mississippi College from postseason play.
Chris Hennessey is in his sixth year as leading the Lady Flames and has posted an 85-11-3 overall record. He has led his club to NCAA postseason appearances in each of his five seasons.
His Lady Flames have given up just five goals all season with six shutouts in 10 matches, including not allowing a goal since March 5
th. In the last match against Delta State in the GSC semifinals, Lee outlasted the Lady Statesmen in a scoreless draw, converting all five of their shots in the shootout.
Offensively, ten different Lady Flames have scored goals this season, led by Kelsey Yoder with five goals, while Ruth Edrington has put four in the back of the net with each being a game-winning score. Eight different Lee players have tallied assists this season, led by three from Mallory Hayden and two from Riley Henry.
Hennessey admits, "It is troubling, to be honest, about our goals scoring. We know as a team that we need to create more and make sure we finish the chances we get when they present themselves. The team has worked hard all spring and is excited to be playing Saturday. Like I mentioned, Mississippi College is a good team and we will have to be at our best for the entire game.
"Our first goal right now is to finish the spring with a win, and then we will take some time to plan for the fall. There will be a lot of new faces in the fall, so I hope the momentum we have going right now can carry over through the returning players once September comes around," the Lee coach concluded.
Defensively, the Lady Flames have allowed fewer than 10 shots in 6-of-10 matches. The back line is led by Lauren Weimer and Kate Dirkse, who have started all 10 games and leads the team in minutes played. Goalkeeper Jackie Burns has posted 0.32 goals against average with four shutouts in six starts. She has allowed just two goals on 60 shots faced with 29 saves.
The Lady Choctaws are directed by the only head coach in the school history. Darryl Longabaugh is in his 24th season. Mississippi College has yet to allow more than one goal in a single match this season, coming from behind in three straight wins over West Alabama, Delta State and Huntsville.
Erin Hederman is the Lady Choctaws' leading scorer with six goals. The Mississippi College balanced offensive attack features nine different players with assists. The defense has given up just 35 shots all season. In goal, Sara Maleski has played all 180 minutes in the postseason.Â
