LIVINGSTON, Alabama – The No. 2-ranked Lee baseball team scored 27 runs and pounded out 32 hits in Sunday's 13-5 and 14-4 (seven innings) to complete a three-game sweep of host University of West Alabama at Tartt Field. The wins put the Flames at 28-4 overall and 23-3 in GSC play. The Tigers dropped to 11-17, 9-16.
The Flames will travel to Young Harris College on Wednesday when they play a single non-conference game. More importantly, Lee will return home next weekend hosting Mississippi College in a three-game series. Lee will close out the conference schedule at second-place West Florida on April 30 and May 1.
"It's another tough week for us. We have a big mid-week road game at Young Harris and then host one of the hottest teams in the GSC with Mississippi College," pointed out Lee head Coach Mark Brew.
Alan Smith carried the big stick in Sunday's games pounding out six hits, including four doubles and a homerun. He also drove in nine runs. Colton Yeager also had six hits, including a double. He knocked in a run and scored twice. Dylan Standifer blasted a homer, stroked a double, tallied two runs and collected two RBI in game two.
"Our offense showed up in a big way today. We had great production all over the line-up and Alan Smith had a big weekend," noted Coach Brew.
In Sunday's finale, Smith connected for his first two-bagger that scored Justen Freeman. Standifer doubled and Yeager singled to put the Flames on top 3-0. The
Tigers fought back and cut the margin to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning. Lee struck for two more runs in the second and Smith did the damage with a two-base knock that plated Freeman and Thomas Zazzaro.
Lee put the contest out of reach with five runs in the third and went on top 10-4. Standifer opened the inning with a homer. Yeager doubled and Ryan Beamish got in on the act with a single that plated Freeman. Lee added a single run in the fifth and tallied three times in the sixth to go up 14-4. Smith collected his third double of game two that scored Nate Bynum.
The final damage came in the sixth when Yeager led off the frame with a one-base hit. Zazzaro followed with a single that scored Yeager. Adam Goolsby got into the act with another one-base knock that scored Zazzaro. Freeman kept the rally going with a single that plated Goolsby for the final run of the frame.
Chandler Ring started for the Flames and worked the first three innings. He allowed six hits, three earned runs, struck out three and walked two. Alan Carter (5-1) followed Ring to the mound and also pitched three innings in recording the victory. He gave up only one hit, fanned four and walked two. Tyler Fairchild went to the bump for the final inning and posted a strikeout.
"We struggled with starting pitching today, but our bullpen really did a nice job of settling us down," noted Coach Brew.
Javian Stone was the West Alabama starting pitcher. He lasted two innings giving up seven hits and six earned runs. Mason Hollander pitched the next 3.2 innings. He gave up nine hits and four earned runs. Devin Sisson and JP Elkins came on to complete the mound duties for the Tigers.
Game 1 - Lee 13, West Alabama 5
The Flames exploded for 18 hits in Sunday's opener and put three runs on the board in the first inning. Alan Smith delivered the big blow, a three-run shot over the left-field wall that plated Justen Freeman and Thomas Zazzaro.
The Tigers plated a run in the first inning and tied the contest with two more in the second. Justin Booker and Nick Sims singled home runs in the first two frames.
Lee took complete control in the third inning, going up 8-3. Ryan Beamish ripped a homer over the right-field wall that scored Smith and Freeman. Brandon Daniels kept the inning alive with a single and Dylan Standifer scored on a throwing error by the centerfielder. Riley Black had a one-base knock that scored Landon Silver to complete the uprising.
In the fourth, Beamish continued his homerun attack blasting his 16
th four-bagger of the year that scored Smith, increasing the lead to 10-3. Beamish finished the afternoon with five RBI. He has driven a team-leading 50 runners across home plate.
The Flames didn't score again until the seventh inning. Black continued his solid weekend with a triple that scored Daniels. Smith followed with a two-base hit that scored Zazzaro and Black. In the meantime, the Lee pitching was holding the Tigers to single runs in the sixth and seventh. Every Lee player in the starting lineup had at least one hit. Black and Daniels finished with three hits while Colton Yeager joined Freeman with two hits. The Flames stranded 13 baserunners.
Seth Konkel started and pitched two innings. He allowed three hits and three earned runs, walking three and striking out two. Alan Rickman came on for 3.2 innings and got credit for his second win of the year. He surrendered four hits, no earned runs and fanned two. Michael Hendricks (1.1), Andrew Franklin (1.0) and Nate Dupree (1.0) also put the bump for the Flames.
