The Lee softball team exploded for 24 runs over a doubleheader sweep of Shorter on Friday afternoon at Butler Field.
The Lady Flames crushed two grand slams to claim an 11-3 run-rule win in five innings in game one. Madison Besaw drilled the first one to center in the fourth before Abby McKinney sealed the win with a bomb in the fifth inning.
Taylor De Adder started off the home run derby with a two-run blast in the first inning. Shelby Cole doubled and finished with a pair of hits.
Madison Barnett (4-5) made the lead stick as she tossed four innings in the circle giving up three runs on six hits to go along with four strikeouts. Gracie Leslie came on to deliver a scoreless inning in relief and earned the save.
Madison Pettigrew (1-8) was on the losing end in the circle. She started for the Hawks and allowed six runs on five hits. Courtney Pinkston gave up five runs on five hits in two innings of relief.
Kiera Dudley delivered the lone offense for Shorter as she launched a three-run home run in the fourth inning.
GAME 2 – LEE 13 SU 11
It was a wild game nightcap for the two rivals as Lee and Shorter busted out 24 runs and combined for 22 hits with the Lady Flames getting the final punch in completing the twin bill sweep with a 13-11 win over the Hawks.
The Lady Flames hit two more home runs to give them five on the day as Cole hit a two-run blast in the second and Besaw hit her second long ball of the day in the third inning on a two-run rocket to left.
Lee would take a 9-3 into the fifth inning before the Shorter Hawks roared back using the home run ball themselves. Kaylee Combs started the rally with a two-run homer in the fifth to make it 9-5. Carlee Graham would cap off a five-run fifth with a three-run shot to left.
Shorter would jump ahead 11-9 in the sixth on a three-run four-bagger by Kiera Dudley, her second three-run homer of the day.
The Lady Flames would not be denied however as they fired back with four runs in a wild sixth inning to take a 13-11 lead. With the bases loaded Cole singled through the left side to score Laney Harris before the Hawks gift wrapped two more runs thanks to a pair of errors on the play.
Gracie Leslie (3-4) worked a scoreless final 1.1 innings in the circle for the Lady Flames. Mallory Orchard started and worked 1.1 innings giving up three runs on two hits. Shonna Penney came on to pitch 4.1 innings and allowed eight runs, four earned on nine hits.
Julie Sanderlin got the start for Shorter and was chased after three innings giving up nine runs on seven hits. Jackie O'Reilly (0-4) was tagged with the loss as she surrendered four runs, two earned on four hits.
The Lady Flames have now won three straight games to improve to 12-16 on the year and 9-11 in the GSC. The losses drop the Shorter Hawks to 4-26 and 0-20 in league play.
The two teams will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
