PENSACOLA, Florida – Superb relief pitching by senior right-hander Alan Carter and bounce-back hitting from the Lee baseball team, carried the Flames into a Saturday 8 p.m. contest against the loser of the Tampa and West Florida contest. Carter (6-1) pitched 7.1 innings, allowing just three hits, no runs, striking out 13 and walking one in relief of Tyler Fairchild. Only three teams remain in the six-team NCAA DII South Regional bracket.
The Flames advanced by defeating Alabama Huntsville for the second time in the tournament, 10-4. Lee jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning only to see the Chargers gain a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the second. However, Carter slammed the door on the Huntsville team the remainder of the contest.
The Flames tied the contest at four in the top of the fourth and then regained the lead on a solo homer by the hard-hitting Colton Yeager in the top of the fifth. Lee put five runs on the board over the last three innings to salt the victory away.
Freshman Brandon Daniels had a two-run homer, a double and a single. He finished with four RBI. Justen Freeman joined Yeager and Daniels with three hits. Yeager also had a two-base hit to go along with his four-bagger. Freeman finished the afternoon with two RBI and a run scored. Dylan Standifer and Alan Smith had an RBI with a single. Smith also tallied a run. Riley Black rounded out Lee's 12-hit attack with one hit and a run.
"What a gutsy performance by our guys. The offense was up to the task and had some big swings led by Daniels, Freeman, and Yeager. Carter was tremendous on the mound with a huge performance with our backs against the wall. We will reevaluate our pitching and see whether we play West Florida or Tampa and get ready to go tonight. It will be another challenge, but our guys have been resilient all year," praised Lee coach Mark Brew after his club improved to 36-10 on the year.
