King Takes Down Volleyball, 3-1 on Day 2 of Lee Invitational

The Lee volleyball team suffered a 3-1 setback to King University on day two of the Lee Invitational from Walker Arena.

The Tornado edge the Lady Flames in the opening set 25-22. Lee trailed 24-19 but managed three straight points before King closed out the set. The Lady Flames flipped the script in set two winning 25-22 to even the match. King took the all important third set 25-17 as it jumped out to a 14-8 lead and never looked back.

The fourth set was a nail biter from start to finish. The Lady Flames trailed 10-6 early before rattling off four straight points on two kills from Emma Flowers, one from Allie Whittinghill and an attack error by the Tornado. Lee would hold a 20-16 but failed to put the visitors away. King scored four straight points to earn set point at 24-23. Flowers would earn the final of her 19 kills to tie it up at 24. An attack error gave King another match point, but Whittinghill tied things up with her 15th slam. The match ended 27-25 on an attack error by Lee and a closing kill from King's Hailee Blankenship.

"We were not efficient on the backline tonight and in the end, the match did not fall in our favor. I give a large credit to the switched lineup by King and the execution they had all around," said first-year head coach Callie Murphy. "Hannah Upton and there Allie Whittinghill had a great night and took massive swings and presented a great block for the team."

For the second straight night Flowers led the offensive attack with 19 kills. Whittinghill followed with 15 and Hannah Upton added nine. Reagan Bratton had 46 assists as the primary setter and Lyssi Snouffer and Kamryn Halpin anchored the backline with 21 digs each.

"We dug a lot of balls tonight, just couldn't finish.  That will be a big emphasis heading into tomorrow's match against a solid Kentucky State.  We are ready to finish this tournament on a high note," added Murphy.

Lee falls to 1-5 on the young season while the Tornado improve to 3-5.

The Lady Flames will wrap up the Lee Invitational on Saturday afternoon as they host Kentucky State at 2:30 p.m. The Thoroughbreds fell to Young Harris (3-2) and Shorter (3-0) earlier in the day.
