Lady Flames Top Panthers, Fall to Lions on Day One of Lee Invitational Tournament

The Lady Flames took down Ohio Dominican, 10-5 in their home opener on Friday before dropping game two against Emmanuel, 3-0 from Butler Field.

Madison Barnett (2-2) started and pitched the first three innings in game one before coming back on in the seventh to slam the door. The sophomore struck out six and gave up two runs. Alaina Watson worked three innings in relief and gave up three unearned runs while striking out four.

Barnett gave up a single run in the first and second, but the game turned as she worked out of a bases loaded jam with a fielder's choice and a big strikeout.
From there the offense took over as freshman Javaria Smith helped key a six-run third inning for the Lady Flames with a two-run double. She finished 2 for 4 with three RBI. Breanna Patton, Taylor De Adder and Janina Remley also had multi-hit efforts.

Madison Shemm had three hits and scored twice to lead the Panthers. Braxton Downs got the scoring started with an RBI double in the first. Downs finished with two doubles and two RBI.

Sydney Long (0-1) started and worked two innings giving up six runs, three earned on four hits. Addison Smodelli came on in relief to toss four innings allowing four runs, three earned.

"I thought Barnett did a nice job of working around trouble early to keep us in the game. She also showed great poise to be able to come back in the game and close it out for us," said Lee head coach Emily Russell. "Offensively we did a nice job with stringing hits together with two outs in the six-run second."

GAME TWO – LEE 0 EC 3
Emmanuel's Fairey outdueled Lee's Nyah Vogel in the circle to give the Lions a 3-0 victory over the Lady Flames in game two.

Fairey tossed a complete game shutout and gave up just five singles. She walked one and struck out seven.Vogel (2-1) was the tough-luck loser. She allowed just three runs, two earned on four hits. She struck out 10 and did not walk a batter.

The Lady Flames appeared poised to finally breakthrough against Fairey in the fifth inning as they loaded the bases with nobody out on three straight singles from, Allie Scalzo, Shelby Cole and Breanna Patton. Fairey danced around the trouble however with an infield pop out, fielder's choice at home and pop up to second.

The Lions finally got on the board in the seventh. Nadler scored on a Lee error and Gibson added some insurance runs with a two-run single to center.

"We didn't do a very good job of capitalizing on the opportunity we had in the fifth inning," said Russell. Fairey pitched well for them but I didn't think we made the appropriate adjustments we needed to at the plate. Nyah was really good again today in the circle and deserved to get the win."

The Lady Flames will wrap up the Lee Invitational on Saturday as they get another shot at both Ohio Dominican and Emmanuel. The Lady Flames will host the Ohio Dominican at 1 p.m. and wrap up the weekend with Emmanuel at 3 p.m. The Panthers hit a walk off two-run homer to defeat Emmanuel, 9-8 in the final game on Friday.

"We're excited to get right back out on our home field tomorrow and get another shot at two quality teams. This is a good test for us before heading into conference play next weekend," concluded Russell.
