Jackson, Tenn. – The Lee softball team got the bats going to earn its first GSC victory of the young season with a commanding 11-2 victory at Union in the series finale against on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Flames wasted little time in putting yesterday's doubleheader losses out of their mind with a four-run first frame. Lee would tack on another run in the second and close things out with a six-run explosion in the sixth inning.
Javaria Smith led the Lady Flames offensive attack with 3 for 4 day at the plate. The freshman doubled home a run to get the scoring started in the first inning and provided a bookend with a two-run single in the Lee six-run sixth inning. Leadoff hitter, Carissa Frost tripled in the second and scored three runs in the contest. Kylie Bohl and Ana Macha also recorded three hits in the contest as the Lee offense delivered 13 hits including three extra base knocks.
"We responded well to adversity today. We talked last night and set some things in place that should help us have more sustainable success," said Lee head coach Emily Russell. "I'm proud of them for trusting each other enough to take their relationships as teammates to a deeper level. We took a step in the right direction today."
Nyah Vogel made the most of the run support as she went the distance in the circle for the Lady Flames to move to 3-3. In six innings she allowed five hits and two runs while striking out five.
Olivia Baker (1-3) failed to make it out of the first and was tagged with the loss for the Bulldogs. Kira Finkley gave up four runs in 4.2 innings of relief and Charli Rice was touched up for three runs and recorded the final two outs.
Idalia Alarcon provided the lone offense for the Bulldogs on a two-run homer down the left field line in the bottom of the second.
The Lady Flames improve to 5-7 and 1-2 in the GSC while Union falls to 4-7 and 2-1 in league play. Lee will get return to Butler Field for a weekend showdown with No. 3 Valdosta State, beginning Saturday at 1 p.m.
