Softball Drops Pair of Slugfests to No. 2 Valdosta State

The Lee softball team swung the bats well, but No. 2 Valdosta State swung them better in earning a doubleheader sweep over the Lady Flames on Saturday from a cold and wet Butler Field.

The Lady Flames fall to 5-9 on the year and 1-4 in the GSC. Valdosta State improves to 12-3 overall and remains a perfect 5-0 in league play. The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

GAME 1 - Lee 7 VSU 9
The Lady Flames dropped game one, 9-7 despite making things interesting with a five-run bottom of the seventh. Annalyn Ormsby capped off the five-run rally with a three-run homer. Taylor De Adder got Lee on the board with a two-run blast in the fifth inning. Ormsby finished a perfect 4 for 4 in the game with three RBI.

Valdosta State started there scoring off when Lewis homered to center off the glove of Lee centerfielder Ormsby who was racing back to try and make an over the shoulder grab. After the solo homer the Blazers added four more in the third on a Gano RBI single, Sulte sacrifice fly, Proctor double and Macera single. Proctor capped off her four RBI day with a three-run homer in the seventh inning

Madison Barnett (2-5) grinded out 6.2 innings in the circle for the Lady Flames and was tagged for eight runs on nine hits. Barnett did strike out eight in the contest. Alaina Watson allowed a run on two hits before recording the final out of the seventh.

Samantha Richards (8-1) recorded both wins in the circle on Saturday for the Blazers. In game one she went 6.1 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits. Richards struck out 11 and walked three. Mia DeAngelis came on to get the final two outs to earn the save.

GAME 2 – LEE 11 VSU 14
The nightcap brought even more offense from both clubs as Valdosta State rallied back to top Lee, 14-11.

The Lady Flames got things going early with a six-run first inning. Ormsby continued her torrid day at the plate with an RBI single in the first and bases loaded three-run triple in the third. The sophomore outfielder finished 6 for 10 with six RBI on the day. Her three-base knock in the third frame made it 11-6 Lady Flames but the Blazers responded with eight-unanswered runs.

Lee held an 11-9 advantage going in to the final inning but the Blazers would not be denied as Clegg singled home a run to center before Nicky Pendleton gave her team the lead with a three-run homer to right field.

Nyah Vogel started for the Lady Flames and gave up nine runs on nine hits. She struck out four and walked three. Barnett (2-6) worked the final two innings and gave up five runs on five hits.

Morgan Hill got the call for and tossed just one inning for the Blazers after giving up six runs in the first. DeAngelis worked two innings of relief and allowed five runs. Richards then entered and shut down the Lee offense over four scoreless innings of relief to get her second win of the day. She allowed just one hit and struck out four.
