Lady Flames Earn Key GSC Victory Knocking Off Flagler, 15-9

The Lee women's lacrosse team moved to 3-0 in conference play with a 15-9 victory over Flagler on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Flames outscored the Saints, 7-3 in the second half.

Brittney White led the way with five goals and Dariana Blanton added to her GSC league-leading goals and points and with four scores.  Blanton has tallied 42 goals and 55 points this season. Caleigh Kenna and Megan Trout added a pair of goals and Shayna Ryan and Hannah Vecsey tallied one goal each.

The Lady Flames were down 6-5 with 4:45 left in the second before going on an 8-0 run from 3:05 left in the second to 11:36 remaining in the fourth.

The Lady Flames dominated the draw control to the tune of a 19-9 advantage. White posted nine and Ryan added eight. Kaleigh Bernard worked the first half in goal for Lee and registered her fifth win of the season with four saves. Caleigh Smith was dominate in goal in the second half with 10 saves and three groundballs while giving up just three goals.

"Today was a solid win against a talented team.   Even though this is Flagler's first year, they have a roster of talented transfers and a veteran coach, so we knew they would be competitive. We had a slow start today with seven turnovers in the first period which gave Flagler multiple scoring opportunities.  We started out in a man-to-man defense, and it wasn't quite working.  Our move to a zone defense slowed them down a bit and we were able to shut them out in the 3rd period.  We had excellent play from Kaleigh Bernard and Callie Smith in goal and they made some ninja like saves," said Lee head coach Derrel Martin.

The fourth-year head coach went on to highlight the offensive effort from his senior and junior leaders, "It was a similar story on the offensive end where we threw the ball away early but eventually figured out our passes and started scoring.  Our ability to repeatedly get the draw controls keeps us in any game.  Brittany White had nine and Shayna Ryan was right behind with eight draws.  We dealt with faceguards against both Brittney White who had five goals and Dariana Blanton who had four goals, so we were able to adjust to those Flagler defensive changes."

Alex Eubanks started and played 41:59 in goal for the Saints. She had seven saves while giving up 12 goals. Lauren Ribadeneira was called on for the final 18:01 and had a pair of saves.

Lee improves to 6-6 on the year and a perfect 3-0 in the GSC. Flagler falls to 7-6 and 1-1 in league action.

"This win was key for us to stay atop the conference standings, and we will need to just focus on one opponent at a time for the rest of the season," concluded Martin.

The Lady Flames will hit the road for the next two games. Lee visits Montevallo on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Alabama Huntsville, April 9 at 3 p.m.
