MONTEVALLO, Alabama – The Lee women's lacrosse team remained unbeaten in Gulf South Conference play with a stellar second half to take down Montevallo, 14-9 on Saturday afternoon.
Brittney White scored five goals and Dariana Blanton added four, including three in the fourth quarter, to lead the Lady Flames past the Falcons. Lee outscored Montevallo, 9-3 in the second half after trailing 6-5 at halftime.
Caleigh Smith proved to be a brick wall in goal as she allowed just three goals and had three saves in 44:42 minutes of work to earn the victory. Jaylee Giffin guided the defense as she posted two groundballs, two caused turnovers and two draw controls.
"Today we got off to slow start and didn't control the ball very well from the outset of the game. We made some rash decisions with our passing and turned the ball over frequently in the early minutes. I made some adjustments to our offense this week and we may have been uncomfortable in the beginning," noted Lee head coach Derrel Martin. "We ended up with just 12 turnovers for the game, which is not bad, so it looks like we tightened it up in the second half. Just like last week, we had great play from both of our goalies."
The Lady Flames held a 14-11 edge in draw controls and 27-22 advantage in shots. Montevallo had 10 saves and Lee finished with nine.
"We were not as dominate on the draw as we like to be but still brought down 14 draw controls to UMs 11 with Brittney White getting eight of those," Martin added.
Anja Kuys posted two goals to lead Montevallo. Rachel Rose started in goal and had 10 saves while allowing eight goals over 40:26 of work.
"We are emphasizing taking one game at a time in our attempt to win the GSC title this year. Next up is UAH and we will need to be ready to play hard to win at their place," said Martin.
The Lady Flames move to 7-6 overall and are 4-0 in the GSC with two conference games remaining. The Falcons fall to 3-9 and are 0-3 in league play.
Lee will stay on the road to visit rival Alabama Huntsville next Saturday at 3 p.m. before celebrating Senior Day and wrapping up the home portion of the regular season on April 13 at 4 p.m. against Young Harris at the Ray Conn Sports Complex.
