HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Alabama Huntsville Chargers started fast and never looked back in handing the Lee women's lacrosse team a 24-13 Gulf South Conference road loss on Saturday afternoon.
The victory puts the Chargers (7-6, 4-0) in the driver's seat to claim the GSC Regular Season Championship and host the conference tournament at the end of April. The loss drops the Lady Flames to 7-7 and 4-1 in the GSC.
"UAH played a quick and aggressive game, and we will need to regroup and minimize our mistakes before we play again," said Lee head coach Derrel Martin.
The Chargers fired off 47 shots compared to 23 for Lee, 37 shots were on goal while the Lady Flames placed 18 on mark. Lee was guilty of 20 turnovers while forcing UAH into 12. The Chargers scooped up 31 groundballs compared to 16 for Lee and held a 24-16 advantage in draw controls.
Shayna Ryan and Brittney White paced the Lady Flames offense with three goals each. Caleigh Kenna and Megan Trout added two each.
The Chargers held an 8-3 advantage at the end of the first. Lee trailed 12-8 at the half before UAH pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Lady Flames, 12-5.
Katie Gerber and Cara Brown led the way for the Charger with seven goals each. Hailey Gallant posted three scores while Sarah Farley and Isadora Springer.
Kaleigh Bernard played the first 41:01 of the contest and allowed 16 goals to go along with nine saves. Caleigh Smith surrendered eight goals and registered four saves in 18:59 of work. Shaina Doser worked the full 60 in net for the Chargers and earned the victory as she gave up 13 goals and posted five saves.
The Lady Flames will look to wrap up the regular season on a high note as they celebrate seniors Shayna Ryan and Dariana Blanton on Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Young Harris at the Ray Conn Sports Complex.
