BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Lee softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at King University on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Flames scored an extra inning, 5-4 victory in game one before dropping a tightly contested battle, 6-5 in game two.
Lee moves to 20-17 overall while the Tornado are now 27-15. The Lady Flames will return home for a three-game series against Christian Brothers beginning with a doubleheader on Friday at 2 p.m.
"We learned a lot about ourselves today in tough games on the road. We can hopefully approach these next GSC games with focus," said Lee head coach Emily Russell. "We know what we would change from the games and have a day to work on those things before CBU.
GAME 1 – Lee 5, King 4
Sidney Lee delivered a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth and Madison Barnett completed the extra inning complete game in the bottom half to give the Lady Flames a 5-4 win in game one on Tuesday.
Barnett (7-9) allowed four runs, two earned on eight hits. She struck out five and walked two to earn the victory.
Laney Harris hit a two-run double in the sixth to help the Lady Flames take a 4-3 advantage before King tied things up with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
Turner started for King and gave up three runs on three hits in five innings. Duncan (7-2) came on in relief and was tagged with the loss after giving up a pair of runs over three innings.
GAME 2 – Lee 5 King 6
The Lady Flames were just three outs away from the doubleheader sweep before King finished off a two-run comeback with three unanswered runs, including two in the ninth to take game two.
Dye sealed the win with a walk off sacrifice fly to center. Counts (12-7) went the distance and was credited with the win for the Tornado. She allowed just one earned run (five total runs) on seven hits. She struck out three and walked three.
Ana Macha led the Lady Flames offensive attack as she had three hits, including an RBI triple in the sixth. The freshman drove in two and scored two runs.
Nyah Vogel (12-7) tossed a complete game in the circle for Lee as she suffered the loss. Vogel gave up six runs on nine hits and struck out five over 6.1 innings.
