OXFORD, Ala. – The Lee University softball team remained alive in the Gulf South Conference Championship with a 7-5 win over Montevallo Friday afternoon at Choccolocco Park. The Lady Flames (29-22) are one of four teams remaining and advance to face Alabama Huntsville at 1:30 p.m. EDT on Saturday.
Lee tallied just four hits, but were able to coax 12 walks and took advantage of two hit batters and three Montevallo (26-23) errors to provide enough offense for the win. The Falcons recorded eight hits with two for extra bases.
Annalyn Ormsby led Lee with two hits. Sidney Lee and Laney Harris posted the team's other two safeties. Taylor De Adder received three free passes, while Ana Macha, Janina Remley and Lee were each walked twice. Ormsby, Javaria Smith and Breanna Patton had one base on balls each. Remley and Alexa Scalzo also reached once a piece after being hit by pitch.
Caroline Pattison earned the win to improve to 3-0. She allowed four runs on four hits and walked one in 4.1 innings in the circle. Madison Barnett pitched the final 2.2 innings to record her third save of the season. Barnett gave up one run, four hits, walked one and stuck out one.
Montevallo jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with an RBI single by Alisha Lanyon. The Lady Flames answered in the bottom of the inning with a bases loaded RBI single by Lee.
The Falcons regained the lead in the third inning when Taylor Robinson scored ahead of the throw on Lanyon's grounder to first base. Once again, Lee responded in the bottom of the inning. Remley tied the game with a bases loaded walk. Two batters later, Harris delivered a two-out, two-run single to put Lee ahead 4-2.
Remley added another bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning and Scalzo lifted a sacrifice fly to plate De Adder and push the Lee advantage to four. Montevallo chipped away at the difference with a two-run home run by Robinson in the fifth inning and an RBI double by Sierra Easterwood in the sixth inning. The Lady Flames added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Remley scampered home on a passed ball.
The Lady Flames will need to beat UAH twice on Saturday to reach the GSC Championship game against either Auburn Montgomery or West Alabama.
