JACKSON, Tenn. – Despite a valiant effort the Lee volleyball's upset bid at Union University fell just short on Friday night in a 3-2 five-set lost.
The Lady Flames appeared overmatched in a 25-11 first set lost. Set two was a different story. Lee battled but found themselves facing an almost certain 2-0 deficit at 24-20.
From there the Lady Flames scored an improbable six-straight points to take the set, 26-24 and even things up at 1-1. Macy Petty delivered the final point on a kill set up by Kamryn Halpin.
The Bulldogs jumped back on top with a 25-16 win in set three but once again the Lady Flames answered with a 25-23 victory to force the tiebreaking set.
In set five, Lee closed to within one at 10-9 on a kill by Sophia Lippert before the Bulldogs seized controlled with three straight points before closing out the match with a 15-11 win.
Hannah Upton led the way for the Lady Flames with 11 slams and three aces. Abby Stroh posted six kills, three aces and eight digs. Ashton Middleton recorded a double-double registering 17 assists and 16 digs.
Emily Grace Calhoon and Mikiah Perdue led Union with 15 kills each. Perdue also chipped in eight blocks. Jordan Vick set the offense in motion with 39 assists and added 11 digs. Alyssa Tatsch had nine blocks and seven kills.
The Lady Flames fall to 2-10 and 0-1 in the GSC. Union improves to 9-4 and 2-0 in league play. Lee will look to split the trip to West Tennessee with a visit to Memphis to take on Christian Brothers on Saturday at 3 p.m.
