Lady Flames Split With Union As Head Coach Emily Russell Earns 700th Career Win

CLEVELAND, Tenn.- Head Coach Emily Russell achieved a big milestone on Saturday when she earned her 700thcareer win. The Lee University Lady Flames defeated Union University 7-0 in game two of the double header 7-0 to earn the career mark. The two teams split on Saturday with Union winning the first game 3-2. In her 21stseason, Russell has accumulated a record of 700-400-1. The Lady Flames fell in game one 3-2 before bouncing back and shutting out Union 7-0. The second game was highlighted by an inside the park home run from Laney Harris.

The Lady Flames also partnered with Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer. This program began in the fall of 2011.  Since then, professional, college, high school, and youth teams have participated in raising funds and awareness for the #1 disease killer of children.  To date, over a half million athletes have supported our cause.  $4 from every $5 pair of laces and 100% of all donations directly benefit kids and families in the state where the funds are raised.

Game 1

The Lady Flames led most of the game before Union mounted a late comeback and took game one. Lee scored their first run in the second inning when Annalyn Ormsby was walked with the bases loaded to score Kylie Bohl and give the Lady Flames a 1-0 lead.

Lee held onto the 1-0 lead until the seventh inning when Union took the lead. After two quick outs in the top of the seventh, Macey Neal singled for UU. Idalia Alarcon then hit a two-run home run to give Union the lead. A walk and a single put two more runners on base for Union when Courtney Marler brought in the third and final run.

Lee tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. They loaded the bases and Alesandra Razo was then hit by a pitch to bring in Sidney Lee but the tying run was left on the base path and the Lady Flames fell by a final score of 3-2.

Union outhit Lee 12-6 in game one. Riley Vaughn earned the win for Union going all seven innings striking out eight batters and throwing 177 pitches. Ana Macha had two hits in the first game.

Game 2

The Lady Flames came out swinging in the first inning but could not capitalize. They started the game with three straight singles but lined into a double play to end the frame. Lee finally broke the game wide open in the sixth inning.

The Lady Flames scored six runs on six hits in the third. They had four hits and a walk before an out occurred in the third. Sidney Lee, Javaria Smith, Rylie Goodridge, Kylie Bohl, and Ana Macha all had runs batted in for Lee.

The Lady Flames scored their final run of the game when Harris smacked a ball into centerfield. It rolled under the glove out the diving center fielder and made it all the way to the fence. That allowed Harris to sprint all the way around the bases for an inside the park home run.

Natalie Pruitt earned the complete game shutout for the Lady Flames. She gave up a total of three hits and did not give up a hit after the fourth inning. Lee had 14 hits on the offensive end with Bohl and Ormsby each collecting three.

Head Coach Emily Russell was happy with the way the team responded in game two. "The response we had in game two just shows another step of growth for this team. We let one slip away in game one and it could have continued into game two but the bounced back and did not let it bother them."

Lee and Union will play in a rubber match on Sunday, April 16 at 1 PM at Butler Field.
