Lacrosse Earns Program's First Ever Shutout in 23-0 Win over Shorter

Freshman Callie Curtis scored six goals and the Lee women's lacrosse team delivered the first shutout victory in the seven-year history of the program as the Lady Flames scored a dominating 23-0 victory over Shorter on Wednesday evening from the Ray Conn Sports Complex.

The previous record for fewest goals allowed was one, in 2021 against Southern Wesleyan. With the win the Lady Flames clinch a spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament starting on April 28.

Curtis led a scoring barrage that featured 37 shots, 31 shots on goal, 23 goals and 10 assists. Maggie Luzier added four goals and assist, Megan Trout tallied three scores, Hannah Vecsey scored twice and had a pair of assists while Emma Bailey registered two goals and one assist.

"My teammates have done such a great job of making me feel welcome in my first year here," said Curtis. "They put me in great positions to score. My coaches have also helped so much in giving me the confidence to know that I can go out and perform at a high level and help my team win."

Makena Luzier, Noelle Harrington, Kelsey McGowen, Avery Schenk, and Brittney White also tallied goals as all-totaled 10 players scored in the contest for the Lady Flames.
Defensively, the Lady Flames dominated possession to the tune of allowing Shorter just four shots in the entire game. Lee held a 17-10 edge in draw controls and 18-5 advantage in ground balls. Kaleigh Bernard and Caleigh Smith combined in goal to register the first shutout in program history.

"Today was just a complete game from start to finish. We talked about controlling possession, passing and connecting on offense, going to the ground and getting ground balls and finishing games better and we did all of that in this one," said Lee head coach Derrel Martin. "We got to get all of our reserves into the game and everyone contributed to the win."

Lee has now won three straight GSC games and improve to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in league play. Shorter ends its season at 2-14 and 0-6 in the GSC.

The Lady Flames will celebrate their seniors and wrap up the regular season on Saturday as they welcome rival Alabama Huntsville to the RCC. A win against the Chargers and Lander loss would propel Lee all the way to the No. 2 seed in the GSC Tournament.
